•Biggest obstacle to the fullest implementation of the
rescue programs embraced within the United Jewish
Appeal is not the war, but lack of adequate funds to
meet critical emergency needs of Jews in distress zones
in Europe and other parts of the world, Jewish refugees
settling in Palestine and refugee integration in the
United States. With aid of funds received by the Joint
Distribution Committee through the United Jewish
Appeal, emigration of refugees (1) is continuing from
Greater Germany and other parts of Europe. Relief com•
mittees have been reconstituted in unoccupied France, in
Belgium and Holland, aiding mothers and children (2)
made homeless by the war. In Lithuania and Rumania

shelter are provided by the J.D.C. (4). Immigration
through alternative channels is continuing into Palestine
and new agricultural settlements are being established

the National Refugee Service. The far•flung programs
carried on by the J.D.C., U.P.A. and N.R.S. now require
the most generous support of American Jewish communi-
ties through the 1940 United Jewish Appeal.

Advertisement Rejected

A series of paid advertise-
ments regarding the Friday arti-
cles was rejected by New York
dailies, three Jewish newspapers
among them.
Mr. Gillmor, publisher of Fri-
day, who is the son of Horatio
Gillmor, retired Rear Admiral of
the U. S. Navy, immediately had
the copy of these advertisements
printed in 500,000 copies and
they were distributed as circu-
lars.
Mr. Gillmore further stated
that 175,000 copies of each of
the issues of Sept. 27 and Oct.
4 of Friday, containing the arti-
cles "American Merchants of
Hate," have been sold.

Jewish Soldiers

BELGRADE (WNS) —

Three
thousand Jewish soldiers, recent-
ly demobilized from the Ruman-
ian Army, were refused permis-
sion to return to their homes in
northern Transylvania by the
Hungarian Government, it was
reported here. Northern Tryn-
sylvania was ceded to Hungary
by Rumania at the insistance of
the Axis Powers.
When the Jewish soldiers re-
turned to Transylvania they
found Hungarian soldiers at the
new border, who turned them
back at the point of bayonets.
