NEW YORK. — The Confer-
ence on Science, Philosophy and
Religion, which has just coin-
pleted its initial meeting, marks
an important step forward in the
development of American life
and culture. This is the first
effort, of such dimensions, to
deal with the relation of the
various disciplines to one an-
other and to the democratic way
of life.
The number who attended the
Conference, and their wide geo-
graphical distribution, offer im-
pressive evidence of the im-
portance of the gathering. Prof.
William E. Ritter, who, despite
his 83 years, undertook the jour-
ney from California to partici-
pate in the deliberations, is rep-
resentative of the zeal and hope-
fulness of all who met. Differ-
ing widely among themselves in
religious faith, intellectual con-
victions, educational experience,
racial origin, and social back-
ground, all the men and women
attending the Conference felt at
one in. the conviction that our
American way of life is facing
a serious crisis that calls on all
Americans for active collabora-
tion on the levels of both thought
and action.
The proceedings of the Con-
ference, including both the pa-
pers submitted and the steno-
graphic record of the oral dis-
cussions, are contributions of
unusual merit to American learn-
ing. The papers include original
contributions to philosophy, to
history, and to the appraisal of
modern literature as well as to
the problem of the inter-rela-
tions of the various disciplines.

R. C. Rothschild To Devote Full
Time to A. J. C.

NEW YORK (WNS) — At a
meeting of the Survey Commit-
tee of the American Jewish Com-
mittee at Temple Emmanuel, it
was reported that arrangements
had been made with Richard C.
Rothschild to serve the Commit-
tee on a professional basis.
Mr. Rothschild has been an ac-
tive member of the Survey Com-
mittee for several years, during
part of which time he has served
as its chairman. He graduated
from Yale University in 1916
and thereafter was engaged in
the field of advertising and pub-
lic relations. In recent years he
has been active in education
work, serving on the faculty of
the New School for Social Re-
search and as a director of Par-
ents Magazine. He is a frequent
contributor to journals of opin-
ion and is the author of several
books on philosophy.
