NEW YORK (Religious News
Service) —The inter-locking re-
sponsobilities of religion, educa-
tion, science and philosophy in
developing a unified American
democracy, were discussed here
at a three-day conference at-
tended by nearly 600 leaders in
these fields. The conference was
held at the Jewish Theological
Seminary.
Included among the well-
known„ authorities who prepared
papers' for presentation to the
conference were Dr. Jacques
Maritain, Dr. Louis Finkelstein,
Dr. F. Ernest Johnson, Profes-
sor Anton C. Pegis, Dr. Stewart
G Cole, Dr. Albert Einstein, and
Professor Mortimer J Adler.
While a certain amount of
disagreement on the method of
approach was evident, most of
the speakers readily admitted the
need for all fields of intellec-
tual endeavor to cooperate in
coping with totalitarian pinion-
phies.
At the same time it was made
clear that there is no necessity
for any of these fields to be-
come subject to one another,
nor must the various religious
traditions be reduced to a com-
mon denominator.
In developing this point Pro-
fessor Maritain declared that "a
sincere and fruitful understand-
ing and cooperation can be
achieved despite the difficulties
to be expected between men re-
spectively dedicated to disciplines
as diverse as biology, psychiatry,
philosophy and Catholic theb-
logy."
Dr. Johnson discussed the mu-
tual responsibilities of religion
and education.
These institutions, he assert-
ed, "cannot be divorced without
disaster to both. There can be
no religious liberty if the basic
faith of our people is destroyed
by the 'acids of modernity' in a
secularist society.'
At an earlier session Professor
Adler described democracy as
"the most perfect form Of politi-
cal community.
"One cannot have reasons for
affirming democracy," he de-
clared, "and at the same time
deny the truths of philosophy
and religion."
Professor
Einstein's paper,
which urged the abandonment of
a personal God in favor of "those
forces which are capable of cul-
tivating the good, the true and
the beautiful in humanity it-
self," was probably the most
widely discussed statement pre-
sented to the conference.
Read in his absence, Dr. Ein-
stein's paper termed the idea
of God as taught by the various
religion7 as "a sublimirtitin°
