Chief Rabbi Prays at Rachel's
Tomb for British Success

1

JERUSALEM Palcor Agen-
cy) — The tomb of Rachel in
"Ephrath's Field," where peni-
tential pilgrimages are held dur-
ing this entire month of Ellul
before Rosh Hashonah, was the
scene of solemn prayer by Chief
Rabbi Ben Zion Meier Uziel of
the Sephardic communities of
Palestine on behalf of the Jeru-
salem Kehillah, for the success
of the British forces in the war.
In a ceremony made more sig-
nificant by the tragedy of Tel
Aviv, the Chief Rabbi offered
his prayer in the presence of a
large gathering, among whom
was District Commissioner Ed-
ward Keith-Roach.

"Proud of Your Courage," Dr.
Weizmann Cables

LONDON. (Palcor Agency)—
"I am proud of the courage
shown by the people of Tel
Aviv," Dr. Chaim Weizmann,
president of the Jewish Agency
for Palestine, cabled to leaders
of the bombed Jewish commun-
ity.
"Please convey to the people
of Tel Aviv and to the entire
Yishuv my own and my col-
leagues' sentiments of heartfelt
solidarity with them in their or-
deal," the cable read.
"This wonton attack on an un-
defended city stresses the dicta-

tors' hatred of the Jewish peo-
ple and their National Home. It
is bound only to strengthen our
resolution to take as Jews a most
active part in the struggle for
democracy and Jewish freedom.
"We here will continue with
renewed vigor our efforts to pro-
vide for full Jewish participa-
tion in the general Allied cause
and especially for an adequate
part for Palestine Jewry in the
defense of its country.
"I am proud of the courage
shown by the people of Tel Aviv
and feel assured that the whole
Yishuv will stand with determi-
nation all trials which await us
until the victory of democracy
and our cause is assured."

It is established that 40 houses
were damaged in the attack,
apart from several wooden huts
which were destroyed by bom-
bardment and fire. New funerals
for additional victims were held
here Friday.
In order better to care for the
injured, the Hadassah Hospital
has established a branch in a
school building near the scene
of greatest damage.

The words of Dr. Chaim Weiz-
