Faith in Democracy Is Ex-

SENATOR LUDINGTON

Faith in democracy is engen-
dered by the study of the politi-
cal careers of men such as Sen-
ator Allen G. Ludington, who
represents the 4th District com-
prising the area roughly from
12th St. to Beaubien.
Himself a "Son of the Amer-
ican Revolution," Senator Lud-
ington always has been a friend
of the foreign-born citizens, for,
as he explained it, "They appre-
ciate America having known
other less-happy lands.
More
American-born
people should
know their stories; they would
become better Americans there-
by. I have no use for those fake
patriots who are always condemn-
ing minority groups for the trou-
bles, imaginary or real, which
beset us. It is their type which
are the guilty ones—not those
that they unfairly and malicious-
ly attack."
Senator Ludington's most note-
worthy act was his fight to save
Civil Service for Michigan. Al-
though corrupt machine-politics
defeated this valiant effort, Lud-
ington earned the undying sup-
port of friends of good govern-
ment. A Republican, he draws
much support from Democrats
who believe that honest officials
and good government is more im-
portant than partisan politics.

THE ORIGINAL
KAUFMANN MAN

The advent of a new leader in
Zionism who was previously quite
unknown to the rank and file of
the movement, naturally arouses
a great deal of speculation, and
one of the various questions that
is being asked about Edmund I.
Kaufmann, the new president of
the Zionist Organization of
America, relates to the original
sponsorship of the new candidate
for the office, who, it is recalled,
a few years ago aspired to the
Grand Mastership of the Bnai
Brith. which position was then
easily won by Henry Monsky of
Omaha, Neb.
As there is bound to be some
wrong guessing with regard to
the original proposals of Mr.
Kaufmann for president of the
Z. 0. A., a successful election
usually also producing a cluster
of false claimants, we may as
well settle the question at once
and give credit where credit is
due. The first sponsor and strong-
est backer of Mr. Kaumann was
no other than the former Su-
preme Court Justice, Louis D.
Brandeis, who not only continues
to follow up vital matters relat-
ing. to Palestine but also takes a
lively interest even in Zionist
politics. Hence, it will interest
many people to know that the
entire credit for grooming and
electing Mr. Kaufmann, goes to
the sage of California Ave.,
Washington, who is otherwise
referred to as "L. D. B."
