LONDON (WNS) — A series of anti-Jewish demon-
strations in Nazi-ocupied Paris was touched off when 20
members of an anti-Semitic organization paraded down
the Champs Elysees shouting, "Down with the Jews."
Jewish shops were looted, windows smashed and
scores beaten before the police intervened. Many of the

demonstrator's were arrested but
released shortly afterwards. Al-
though the Nazi-controlled press
has railed at the Jews since the
Nazi ocupation, these marked the

Religious Groups Contributed $839,000,000
Abroad in 21 Years; Protestants In Lead

WASHINGTON — (Religious
News Service)—Protestant, Cath-
olic and Jewish organizations re-
mitted $839,000,000 abroad in the
21-year period from 1919 to
1939, according to a report pre-
pared by August Maffry of the
Finance Division of the Bureau
of Foreign and Domestic Com-
merce.
Non-sectarian organization con-
tributed $431,000,000, or more
than a third of the total of one
and one-fourth billion dollars
sent abroad for relief, missions
and other purposes.
Protestants led all groups with
contributions estimated at $000,-
000,000. Jews donated $149,000,-
000 and gifts through Catholic
institutions totalled $90,000,000.
Estimates of Protestant contri-
butions were based upon reports
from 130 church groups repre-
senting 98 per cent of the esti-
mated membership of Protestant
churches in the United States.
The bulk of the Protestant re-
mittances, the report said, go to
Asiatic countries. The principal

recipients are India, China and
Japan, in the order named. Sub-
stantial amounts are also used
for mission work in Latin-Amer-
ica and in Africa.
About two-thirds of Catholic
contributions are sent to Europe.
Virtually all of the remainder
goes to Asia, notably to China,
it is stated.
Remittances through Jewish
organizations to foreign coun-
tries are devoted mainly to re-
lief, rehabilitation and resettle-
ment of Jews in Europe and the
Near East, the report states. The
report indicates that the increas-
ing discrimination against the
Jews in Europe has brought the
total of Jewish institutional re-
mittances from approximately
$1,000,000 in 1932 to $14,000,000
in 1939.
More than 50 per cent of to-
tal contributions transferred
abroad in 1939 was destined for
Asia, 32 per cent for Europe,
8 per cent for Latin-America and
the balance for Africa and other
areas.
