same manner, lying literature can
become just as deadly as armored

Pope Pius began his discourse by
pointing out the dangers of evil lit-
erature. He said the Church has nev-
er ceased to raise its voice against
bad reading and reminded that the
Popes have created an Index of pro-
hibited books.
"Along with writings propagating
wickedness and bad customs," His
Holiness continued, "We cannot fail
to mention other writings that spread
falsehood provoking hatred. False-
hood is abominable in the eyes of
God and is detested by every just
man. It is much more detestable when
it spreads calumny and the seed of
discord amongst brethren.
"Anonymous letters written with
rancour and detraction ruin the hap-
piness of domestic life and the union
of the family. Thus, a certain press
appears to have proposed for itself
the scope of destroying, in the great
family of peoples, fraternal relations
between the children of the same
Heavenly Father.

SERIOUS REPERCUSSIONS
"This work of hatred is carried on
sometimes by books but still more
often through newspapers. In the
rush of urgent daily work, an error
may slip by and be accepted by a
badly-managed source of information,
and an unjust impression may be cre-
ated. This may often be the result
of lack of thought rather than de-
liberately. But a similar error, com-
mitted through inadvertence may be
sufficient, especially in periods of
acute tension, to cause serious reper-
cussions.
"Would to God that history showed
no war provoked by a lie cleverly dif-
fused.
"But a publicist aware of his mis-
sion and responsibility, who has pub-
lished error, should feel himself
obliged to reestablish truth. Before
the thousands of his readers upon
whom his writings might make an
impression, he is obliged not to de-
stroy in them and around them the
sacred patrimony of liberating truth
and pacifying charity which 19 cen-
turies of Christianity have laborious-
ly brought to mankind.
"It has been said that the tongue
kills more men than the sword. In
the same manner, lying literature can
be Just as deadly as armored cars
and bombing airplanes."

Relief Socitay has been called for

Father Coughlin did not limit himself
to his personal campaign. He has
sent newsboys to street corners in De-
troit and other cities to sell his propa-
ganda magazine by means of shouting
anti-Semitic slogans, and some of his sales-
men attacked Jews who differed with
them.
The outrageous display of venom by his
agents who sell his Social Justice ought
to make every clear-thinking person, who
hopes and prays for justice and righte-
ousness, feel a sense of shame that such
demonstrations should be possible on
public thoroughfares in the great cities
of the freest country in the world.

•

We Appeal to the Catholic Church

These demonstrations can be stopped
by invoking the law. The police is ob-
ligated to prevent incitement to riot—and
the slogans shouted by Father Coughlin's
salesmen mean just that.
But this outrage must be stopped not
by resorting to force but through an ap-
peal to reason.
The Catholic Church has gone on rec-
ord condemning the spread of "lying pro-
paganda" — whether it is the venomous
spread of hatred by word of mouth or
through the printed circular and maga-
zine.
We appeal to the Catholic Church to
reason with her erring sons to make the
teachings of Pope Pius XII workable and
living ethical factors in the conduct of
their lives.
The Catholic Church has suffered from
false propaganda. The pity of it is that
today Jews are suffering from vile liter-
ature and bigoted speeches spread and
delivered by Catholics.
This type of propaganda is un-Ameri-
can, it is un-Catholic, it is un-Christian,
it is UNFAIR AND DESTRUCTIVE OF
HUMAN PRINCIPLES.
The Catholic Church, its priesthood and
its laity, has it within its power to re-
pudiate the campaign that is being con-
ducted by the Royal Oak priest and the
forces he has gathered around him. For
the sake of true brotherhood and human
kindness, in the interests of the American
spirit that aspired to good neighborliness
and fair play, for the sake of the tradition
for friendship between Catholic and Jew,
in the interests of national unity in this
country as opposed to a policy of destruc-
tive totalitarianism that would divide
the population on racial and religious
lines, we hope that the violent spread of
hatred of the past two years will be
halted. It is inconceivable that men of
true religion should act otherwise after
the head of the great Catholic Church
has said :

"It has been said that the tongue
kills more men than the sword. In
the same manner, lying literature
can be just as deadly as armored cars
and bombing airplanes."

Ensure Their Chances of Success

Children of early school age, or even younger,
reach their late 'teens and early twenties almost
hfore one knows it. Then comes the day when

their education will be ready when needed?
I will be glad to show you how it can be done
