An America Free of Race Hatred

In his speech of acceptance at Elwood,
Ind., last Saturday, Wendell Willkie, Re-
publican candidate for the Presidency,
pledged the voters of America a land
"free of hate and bitterness, of racial and
class distinction."
Libertarians everywhere will be heart-
ened by this declaration. It proves once
more that on the question of tolerance,
freedom and equality there is no differ-
ence of opinion. On this question, as
Mr. Willkie said. "party lines are down."
This ought to be a warning to anti-
Semites everywhere, including the bigots
in this country. We may differ on politi-
cal and economic questions. But there is
no disputing the basic principle incorpo-
rated in the Bill of Rights that all men
are created equal, that tyranny must be
outlawed, that there is no room in Amer-
ica for the venom which is dragging the
European peoples through the mire.
Mr. Willkie has rendered America a
great service with his frank statement on
the question of anti-Semitism.

A Time for Building

Jewish tradition does not perpetuate
mourning. In fact, it limits periods of sad-
ness. The three-week period marking the
Destruction of the Temple and the exile
of Jews from their homeland ends at mid-
day on Tisha b'Ab. Tradition holds that
there is a time for mourning, but the mo-
ment sorrow has been expressed Jews
must begin to redeem and to rebuild. That
is why we observe this Sabbath as the
Saturday of Consolation (Sabbath Naha-
mu).-
Palestine gave a good demonstration of
it last week. In spite of the threats to the
security of the people and the land, the
Jewish National Fund redeemed another
2,250 dunams of land near Gaza, in the
southern section of the country bordering
on the Negev. It is all the more interest-
ing to record that this parcel of land was
bought in territory transfer of which was
forbidden by recent land regulation. But
permission to purchase it was secured and
the work for land redemption and na-
tional rehabilitation goes on.
This is the Jewish way—in Palestine.
It is a way of life and hope which should
serve as a lesson for other peoples whose
national security has been destroyed but
who still nourish hopes of redemption
when the curse of Hitlerism is removed
from the earth.

The Conscription Problem

Americans are honestly divided on the
question of conscription. Those who have
seen the Russian and Prussian systems at
work will not be persuaded too easily to
back the call for a draft of our young
men to serve in the army.
But we are threatened by destructive
forces, and the defense of America must
come first. What, therefore, are the
facts?
George Britt, eminent newspaperman,
editorial and feature writer for the New
York World-Telegram, who was collabor-
ator with the late Heywood Broun in
writing the famous book "Christians

Only," has just published a significant
study of the Fifth Columnists which Wil-
fred Funk, Inc., published under the title
"The Fifth Column Is Here." A warning
in this important revelation has some
bearing on the problem of conscription.
Mr. Britt writes:

"Nearly every one in America, seeing the
daily newspaper picture of Hitler's expanding
destruction in Europe, has given way at some
time or other to nightmarish visions of the
same thing happening here. Blitzkrieg over
America! It isn't difficult to fill in details:
"Sandy Hook's 16-inch guns reaching for
enemy ships, while parachutist s and resident
Saboteurs from the rear blow up Croton res-
ervoir and blast New York's power plants
into darkness. National Guardsmen pitting
their rifle fire against tanks and dive bomb-
ers along the Alleghany ridges, only to have
the Mississippi Valley behind them searei in
a day by planes swarming up from Mexico.
The gold in Fort Knox in a fuehrer's pocket,
oil wells and grai n elevators on fire, rail-
roads cut, the big factories razed in Pitts-
burgh and Detroit, home towns in ruins and
the nation of us turned out along the roads
—millions of refugees, just Okies without a
spot on earth on which to rest in peace. And
for an added attraction, the lush west coastal
valleys overrun and San Francisco's new
bridge dropped into the Golden Gate by an
opportunist second enemy slinking in from
across the Pacific. Mount Vernon a black-
ened spot amidst broken trees, Mark Twain's
river no longer a free-flowing stream, the
wild west as tamed as machine guns can make
it, the America of Jefferson, Lincoln and
our own yesterday s as dead as that Liberty,
Fraternit y and Equality of more than a cen-
tury' s boast of France.
"That is a wild possibility, although less
wild if South America is brought under the
black shadow. The picture of destruction
surely is to be planted in our minds at the
proper time. The threat itself might be
enough. But conc'uest by armies would be
the hard way, and it is not Hitler's choice.
As he says, 'Our real wars will in fact all be
fought before military operation s begin.'
"Dr. Goebbels, the voice of Public Enlighten-
ment, also feels that 'Nothing will be easier
than to produce a bloody revolutio n in North
America . . . No other country ha s so many
social and racial tensions. We shall be able
to play pn many strings there.'
"So if America is to be secure, we must
take precaution against more than Stuka
planes and Panzer divisions, against trans-
port flotillas, bombers and battle cruisers. It
is time to become aware, also, of the invasion
which wears no uniform. sounds no trumpet
and yet is able to march almost at will in.
side the walls."

We accept this as a timely warning
against the Fifth Columnists, and we
commend Mr. Britt's warnings as impor-
tant preparatory movements for our de-
fense. The traitors must be eradicated
in our midst and the spies must be placed
where they belong.
But there is much more than that to be
concerned with. We must take into con-
sideration what Mr. Britt calls "a wild
possibility,"—the possible terror he de-
scribes in the quotation from his "The
Fifth Column Is Here." Against this
"wild possibility" we must be prepared,
and until Hitlerism is relegated to the
jungle and eradicated from civilized so-
ciety, we must be fully organized. For
that purpose, there is no other way out
but to favor conscription.
The "fronts" for Nazism and Commun-
ism have taken a stand against conscrip- "WHAT ! YOU COMING BACK AGAIN!"
tion. There is evidently excellent reason
for such unanimity of thought. They have
united in defense of the Stalin-Hitler pacts
and are now joining their forces against
preparedness in America. This partner-
ship alone should teach us to beware
against the threats to our security from
the Fifth Columnists. A well-prepared
America will speed to end of Hitler-
ism. May it come soon.

Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodziensky

The death of Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grod-
ziensky of Vilna, considered the outstand-
ing scholar in Jewry in our time, is an
irreparable loss to our people.
In the rabbinical world, he was recog-
nized as the greatest Jewish religious
personality of this age. He was the guide
and leader of rabbis and laymen, and he
inspired orthodox Jewry to faith in the
present dark hour in our history.
May his memory be a blessing for all
generations to come.
