Avowed anti-Semites in many
of the larger cities throughout
the United States are candidates
for public offices and are appeal-
ing to race hatred as a means
of capturing votes.
Liberals see in these campaigns
an attempt to emulate the Hit-
ler program by capturing seats
in the two .houses of Congress.
Among the candidates discred-
ited by'anti-Nazi forces are Louis
B. Ward of Royal Oak, Mich.,
who resigned as director of
Coughlin's Social Justice to seek
the nomination for the United
States Senate on the Democratic
ticket in Michigan, and Dr. W.
H. Derry, former president of
MarygrOve College, who is a
candidate for the Republican
nomination for Congress in the
15th Michigan District. Dr. Derry
has been known to deliver ad-
dresses attacking the Jews.

Under the heading ""Pope Denounces
False Propaganda," the Catholic Infor-
mation Bureau of the Archdiocese of De-
troit, with offices at 1234 Washington
Blvd., has issued a significant press re-
lease dated Aug. 13, 1940, and listed as
Vol. 1, No. 6, in a new series of "A Public
Service Devoted to the Dissemination of
News and Information from the Catholic
World."
This bulletin is based on a story from
Vatican City by. Msgr. Enrico Purri,
NCWC Vatican City Correspondent, un-
der date of Aug. 12, which appeared in
the Michigan Catholic issue of Aug. 15.
The Pope's views are of extreme im-
portance at this time, when spreaders of
hate-propaganda are uninterruptedly dip-
ping their poisoned pens in ink that should
be used to encourage true brotherhood
and kindly feelings among men of all
faiths.
This statement from Vatican City comes
to us at a time when a Catholic priest is
guilty of spreading the worst type of ly-
ing propaganda the effects of which have
been to create a violent school of anti-

The views of Pope Pius XII, as report-
ed in the bulletin of the Catholic Infor-
mation Bureau, are incorporated in the
release of the Archdiocese of Detroit, as
follows:
