The Rumanian Tragedy

Dating back to the middle of the last
century, Rumania vied with Czarist Russia
as the most violently anti-Semitic country
in Europe. Today this "tradition" for in-
decency finds an echo in the series of de-
crees issued in an effort to destroy what-
ever rights the Jews there still possessed
before the Nazis began to dominate King
Carol and his government.
The position of the Jews in Rumania
is in great measure weakened by the re-
duction of their numbers in half as a re-
sult of Soviet Russia's acquisition of Bes-
sarabia. Nevertheless,, the fact that the
Jews form nearly 5 per cent of the popu-
lation of the land and that they are en-
gaged in important industrial pursuits
may be their saving grace. It is generally
agreed that it would be impossible to en-
force all the Nazi rules momentarily be-
cause it would threaten the economic se-
curity of the country.
But this leaves open the danger of
gradual elimination of Jews from business
and industries and their eventual pauper-
ization in the Nazi style. The burden for
relief threatens to become ever greater
on the remaining free Jewish communi-
ties. Apparently, only the total defeat of
Nazism will save Jewry in the conquered
lands. Since the destruction of the rights
of all other groups follows the ruination
of Jews under Nazism, only the crushing
of Hitlerism will save humanity.

Symbol of Unity

Edmund I. Kaufmann, president of the
Zionist Organization of America, has
issued a call to American Jews to par-
ticipate in the Shekel registration for
1940.
The Shekel, it should generally be
known by this time, since more than a
million and a half Jews in the world have
been paying this 50-cent tax as a symbol
of their affiliation with the movement for
reconstruction of Palestine as the Jewish
National Home, represents much more
than a very nominal payment of registra-
tion in behalf of Zionism. It is a mark of
endorsement of national self-respect exr-
cised by Jews who aspire to create in the
cradleland of our people an opportunity
for those who settle there bebe masters of
their own destiny.
Mr. Kaufman, who speaks for only one
branch of the Zionist movement, points
out in his appeal that the Shekel "is again
being fashioned as the symbol of Jewish
unity and achievement." He is right. In a
time like the present, when everything
that has been built with loyalty and de-
votion by European peoples is being de-
stroyed and drenched in blood, it is en-
couraging to read that Jews in Palestine
are buildng and creating; that they are
not frightened by bombs and air raids;
that they continue to redeem the soil of
Palestine as the inalienable property of
the Jewish people upon which are to be
built wholesome colonies.
The months of August and September
have been set aside for the sale of the
Shekolim as symbols of participation in
the work for Palestine's redemption. Zion-
ists of all parties are obligated to make
the current brief campaign as effective
and as fruitful as possible ; and all Jews
who are not affiliated with any branch of
the Zionst movement owe it to themselves
and to posterity to encourage those who
seek their registration through the sale
of the Shekel.

overwhelmingly Christian. (The latest
census showed that Montana has a popu-
lation of approximately 550,000, of whom
only 1,g00, or 0.22 per cent of the total
were Jews). Nevertheless Dr. Jacob Thor-
kelson. Norwegian-born, would mislead
readers of his Congressional Record ar-
ticle into believing that his defeat was
not at the hands of the American people.
It is useless to argue the point he makes
regarding "constitutional government and
sanity." It is this that saves us from men
like Thorkelson, and it is only under a
smokescreen protected by his own ac-
quired constitutional rights that he and
the like of him destroy sanity. But it is
sufficient to know that the American
voters have not been fooled by the Thor-
kelsonian outbursts in print, at Govern-
ment expense. We reiterate what we said
editorially in our issue of July 26: "Ap-
parently the American voter will not stand
for such dissemination of intolerance."
