Austrian "Most Hated by the Nazis" Is
Dead in German Concentration Camp

The Non-Sectarian Anti-Nazi
League has learned of the death
in a German concentration camp
of Dr. Moritz Zalman, who, be-
fore the Nazi invasion of Aus-
tria, was regarded as the man
"most hated by the Nazis" in
that country. A writer and attor-
ney, he was vice chairman of the
Harand movement, world organi-
zation against race hatred and
human distress. Dr. Zalman was
instrumental in the passge of
much social legislation in Austria
preceding the occupation by Hit-
ler's army.
Dr. Zalman was the particular

target of Nazi ire because of the
high regard in which, despite his
being Jewish, he was held by the
entire Austrian people.
After the Austrian occupation
Dr. Zalman was arrested and
placed in a concentration camp.
His Nazi jailers vented their es-
pecil hatred for him by "cruel
and inhuman tortures," in the
words of the report received by
the League, which drove him al-
most to madness before death
ended his sufferings.
Dr. Zalman died on May 29
after more than two years in the
concentration camp of Oranien-
burg-Sachsenhausen.

dren's house and workers' houses.
The project is completed with the
raising of the 20-foot watch
tower after which the children
(lance the vigorous Palestinian
"Hora".
The above is only one example
of the intricately planned pro-
gram whereby the youth is given
an active athletic, camping and
handicraft program, vet creating
an organic unity with the lie-
brew language, songs, dances,
folkways, and the totality of
Jewish life.
In days of Jewish despair and
defeatism as today, the above
activities, which are only part

of a year-round program of
Hashomer Hatzair, stand as a
challenge to a hostile world and
reaffirmation of the Chalutz
youth of steadfast unity with
the Yishuv.
