May Grant U. S. Visas
to Approximately
13,000 Children

WASHINGTON (WNS)—Mov-
ing swiftly to eliminate the red
tape hampering efforts to bring
British children to the United
States for the duration of the
war, the Departments of State
and Justice announced plans to
grant visas to approximately 13,-
000 children by Aug. 1.
The announcement followed a
statement by President Roosevelt
that the failure of Great Britain
to supply ships to bring the chil-
dren here and not American red
tape was responsible for the
slowness with which the evacua-
tion of children under 16 years
was proceeding.

Proposed Program

The new program for bringing
these children to the United
States is as follows:
1—Children will be admitted
on visitors' visas upon the show-
ing of intention that the small
refugees will return home after
the war. This eliminates quota re-
strictions of 6,500 per month,
now applied to those entering the
country from Great Britain on
"permanent" visas.
2—A corporate affidavit, rather
than affidavits from individuals
alone, will be accepted by the gov-
ernment, the corporation obtain-
ing greatly simplified individual
affidavits itself. The corporate af-
fidavit will be supported by a
trust fund equal to $50 for each
child entered. Corporations must
be approved by the Attorney-
General.
3—American consuls abroad are
to be informed that visas can be
issued to children whose names
have not been approved by the
department but who have merely
been selected by representatives
abroad of the United States Com-
mittee for the Care of European
Children.

Say Franz Werfel
Executed by Nazis

NEW YORK (WNS)—Franz
Werfel, world-famous 'German-
Jewish novelist and author of
"The Forty Days of Musa
Dagh," who fled to France
from Germany, has been seized
and shot by the Nazis, ac-
cording to a British broad-
cast heard here by the Na-
tional Broadcasting Company.
The broadcast said, however,
that the report has not been
confirmed.
Another report received here
from London said that Mr.
Werfel's British publishers have
made fruitless attempts to find
the author. He was last re-
ported at Vichy, France.

ZURICH, Switzerland (WNS)
—Mass arrests of Jewish jour-
nalists, attorneys and merchants
throughout France marked the
formal creation of a Fascist state
under the dictatorship of Marshal
Henri Philippe Petain.
The new Fascist government
launched its regime with a
"purge" at Vichy, temporary cap-
ital, resulting in the arrest of at
least 20 persons, mostly Jews
known to have been strongly pro-
British. The purge followed pub-
lication of a decree by the Petain
government providing that "only
men of French parentage" may
hold important government posts.

Eliminate Jews

Nazi sources said that the new
decree will result in "the elimi-
nation of Jews from government
posts." The Nazi radio announc-
ed that the 20 persons seized,
who were ordered to leave Vichy
immediately, are still subject to
imprisonment. The German radio
described those arrested as "Jews
and Leftist journalists who in re-
cent weeks have been gathering
information from parliament on
behalf of foreign quarters."
Neutral observers here believed
that the decree was the beginning
of Nazi-inspired anti-Semitic cam-
paign similar to those launched
in other Nazi-dominated lands.
They pointed to the fact that
almost the entire French press
has published anti-Semitic edi-
torials in recent days.

One Killed, Ten Injured in One of Key Cities

in Palestine

JERUSALEM (WNS) — One person was killed and
several others, including an American employee of an
oil refinery, were injured, when 10 Italian airplanes
dropped more than 50 bombs during a 20-minute raid on
Haifa, one of the most important port and industrial
cities of Palestine.
The Italian bombers, coming in two waves, were

driven off by British planes and
anti-aircraft batteries, which fired
on the raiders from the summit
of Mount Carmel.
As soon as the air raid sirens
sounded their warning, Jews and
Arabs went into recently con-
structed air raid shelters. Al-
though the raid was the first ex-
perienced in Palestine since the
beginning of the war there was
no panic. In the air raid shelters,
Jews and Arabs discussed meas-
ures necessary to defeat their
common enemy.
The injured American was J.
E. Flannigan. Several tanks of
the Iraq Petroleum Company
were damaged during the raid.
(An official Italian war com-
munique from Rome said that
the Italian raiders caused fires
which could be seen by Italian
aviators 125 miles away. The
communique alleged that great
damage was done to the port
of Haifa and that all planes par-
ticipating in the Haifa raid re-
turned safely to their bases.)
