sion at the World's Fair which
took the lives of two detectives

ficers.
The two detectives were killed
while examining a bomb which
had just been removed from the
c rowded British Pavilion and
taken to an isolated section of
the Fair. Shortly after the ex-
P lo • , ion hundreds of detectives
combed the city, questioning
every known pro-Nazi, including
John F. Cassidy, one of the
Christian Frontists recently ac-
quitted of conspiring to over-
throw the United States Govern-
ment.
While city officials praised the
heroism of the police officers who
removed the bomb from the Brit-
ish Pavilion, saving hundreds from
death or injury, an aroused po-
lice department pressed its in-
vestigation. A detective was sent
to Andover, N. J., to question
three officers of the Nazi Bund
who had been arrested earlier in
the day, charged with the viola-
tion of a New Jersey law against
the wearing of a non-official uni-
form.
Other detectives arrested Cae-
sar Kroeger, described as a for-
mer member of the German-
American Bund, after they found
two Luger revolvers in his apart-
ment. Each revolver was cov-
ered with a copy of Adolf Hit-
ler's "Mein Kampf". Kroeger
was held for violation of the Sul-
livan law.
Meanwhile, it was reported
that the explosive might have
been part of the 39 sticks of
dynamite stolen last May 29
from a construction shack at the
new Free Synagogue building.

Deportation Proceedings Against
Bishop

Deportation proceedings have
been instituted against William
Gerald Bishop, now in the Fed-
eral House of Detention in de-
fault of $5,000 bail for retrial
on a charge of conspiring to
overthrow the United States Gov-
ernment.
Bishop, described by govern-
ment witnesses as the leader of
the Actions Committee of the
Christian Front, is scheduled to
be retried, together with four
others, in Brooklyn Federal Court
during the early part of Septem-
be•. The jury in the first Chris-
tian Front trial was unable to
reach a verdict in the case of
Bishop and four others, while ac-
quitting the nine other Christian
Front defendants.

Asks Investigation of Christian
Front Jury

On July 2, Dr. L. M. Birkhead,
national director of Friends of
Democracy, Inc., sent the follow-
ing telegram to Attorney General
Robert H. Jackson:
"At a Christian Front rally
Friday night, June 28, at Pros-
pect Hall in Brooklyn, Rev. Ed-
ward Brophy announced that
Mrs. Helen Titus, foreman of
the jury which acquitted the
Christian Fronters in the Fed-
eral Court in Brooklyn, was his
first cousin. The implication in
the announcement was that Mrs.
Titus was very friendly to the
Fronters. Rev. Brophy is closely
identified with the Christian
Front movement and only yes-
terday qualified himself as an ex-
pert on the Jewish question to
testify at the Joseph McWilliams
trial. McWilliams is a friend of
the German - American Bund.
Friends of Democracy requests
an investigation of Christian
Front influence brought to bear
on the Federal jury of which Mrs.
Titus was foreman."

lowing item: "Kenneth A. Brown,

(IV N S)—

Frances Biddle, Solicitor General
of the United States, declared
that the Federal Government

aliens" would not be "unjustly
condemned for the disloyal be-
havior of a few" and that the
Alien Registration Law would be
"their protection from persecu-
tion."
The Solicitor General said that
the new law, which calls for the
registration and fingerprinting of
the nation's 3,500,000 aliens be-
ginning on September 1, repre-
sents no change in the govern-
ment's policy towards non-citi-
zens.
Mr. Biddle said: "Registration
records will, in accordance with
the provisions of the act, be se-
cret and confidential, and will be
available only to persons desig-
nated by the Commissioner, with
the full approval of the Attor-
ney General, so that no one may
have any fear that these records
will be used by employers of la-
bor for blacklists or for the pur-
pose of discriminating against
aliens."
He urged "that all of us exer-
cise the greatest degree of re-
straint in our attitude towards
aliens." "We must remember,"
he said, "that the overwhelming
majority of them are loyal. Many
of them have lived here for
years, have raised families here,
have contributed generously to
the growth of our country, and
are thoroughly identified with
America. In most cases there are
natural reasons why persons of
foreign origin have not become
citizens."

Jews, following a conference with
the Children's Overseas Recep-
tion Board, had established a spe-
cial committee to expedite the
evacuation of Jewish children,
many of whom will be sent to
the Dominions and the United
States.

and the spirit behind them can-
not be permitted to spread. The
passing of scurrilous literature,
stirring up racial antagonisms,
cutting inscriptions in street cars,
approving Hitler's acts, and urg-
ing the destruction of democra-

"It is a matter of pride to our
citizens that we have a police
department that has given this
city an enviable reputation by
reason of their activity in keep-
ing crime at a minimum, and
making our city a safe and de-
sirable place in which to live.
Again, the police department is
to be highly commended for their
skill in solving this crime, despite
repeated denial. The peace and
safety of our community depends
upon the solving of the crimes,
and the punishment of those who
commit them. If it were not for
the advanced scientific means

Whole Middle East Seen as One
Front by Jewish Agency

JERUSALEM. (Palcor Agen-
cy)—The whole of the Middle
East is regarded by the Jewish
Agency for Palestine as consti-
tuting one front, it was explained
to a correspondent by an authori-
tative source. The Agency con-
siders that help rendered to the
British forces in any section of
the Middle East constitutes the
first line of defense for Palestine
and helps to insure the salvation
of the Jewish National Home.
This attitude is reflected in
the wholehearted manner in which
the Yishuv is responding to Brit-
ish appeals for volunteers to the
mechanized armed forces.
The Jewish Agency is using the
facilities of the Histadruth (Gen-
eral Jewish Federation of Labor)
in order to expedite the securing
of qualified men.

ST. PAUL, Minn.—A scathing
denunciation of the fifth column
in the United States and particu-
larly the Nazis who seek to cre-
ate racial divisions in the United
States, was uttered by the Hon.
John W. Finehout, Judge of the
Municipal Court of St. Paul, in
the course of sentencing Robert
Johnson and Charles Boron who
were found guilty on the morn-
ing of May 19 of painting swas-
