arc fleeing to the areas occupied
by Soviet troops. Bessarabia has
a Jewish population of about
370,000, while approximately 50,-
000 live in northern Bukovina.
A communique from Rumania
stated that thousands of Jews
a re leaving their horns in an at-
tempt to get into Soviet-occupied
Rumania. One report said that
more than 7,600 Jews had cross-
ed the Ungheni bridge into Soviet
areas in one day alone.
Thousands of Jews made their
way to Reni, which is in the ex-
treme southwest corner of Bes-
sarabia. It is not clear, however,
at this writing, whether Reni is
part of the territory ceded to
Russia or whether it will remain
in Rumanian hands.

Pitiful Flight

Describing the massacre of
Jews in Galati, the Nazi radio
stated that 2,000 persons, mostly
Jews from Galati and Bucharest
en route to Bessarabia, were piled
into a train and return to Galati.
escorted by Rumanian troops.
The Nazi radio reported that
the crowd "had fought" Ruman-
ian soldiers but "was subdued"
and loaded onto the train. Arriv-
ing in Galati, the Nazi report
charged, one man shot a Ru-
manian soldier, and the whole
group fled. Rumanian soldiers
then encircled part of the town,
this report stated, and shot the
fugitives with machine guns.
The plight of Jews in Rumania
is pitiful. Approximately 225,000
Jews had been deprived of all
their civil and legal rights by the
Citizenship Revision Law of 1938.
Only two days before the Rus-
sian occupation, a decree was
issued excluding all Jews from
the newly-organized Party of the
Nation, organized along Fascist
lines with members of the for-
merly outlawed Iron Guard play-
ing a dominant role in the party.

Italy Will Rule Palestine, Exile
Jews to Abyssinia, Axis
Reported Planning

Axis dictators Adolf Hitler and
Benito Musolini have decided that,
if they defeat the British Em-
pire, Palestine will be ruled by
Italy and the entire Jewish popu-
lation of Palestine will be exiled
to Abyssinia, according to The
Manchester Guardian, usually
well-informed British newspaper.
The newspaper stated that the
jurisdiction of Palestine would
be turned over by the dictators
to the Vatican State, permitting
the Pope to protect the holy
places in Palestine, but the ac-
tual rule of the Holy Land will
be in the hands of anti-Semitic
Fascist Italy.
The Italian press has been wag-
ing a campaign for control of
Pleastine, claiming that King Vic-
tor Emanuel was "the rightful
protector of Islam." It was re-
ported here that 30 bishops,
members of a clerical organiza-
tion actively participating in
Italy's "Battle of grain," has sent
a message to Premier Mussolini
urging him to crown the "un-
failing victory of our army" by
establishing the Italian flag over
the Holy Sepulchre.

the Swiss people to attack the
Jews, broadcasting reports from
France that "the French people
have finally come to their senses
and are fighting against their
real enemy—the Jews." One
broadcast alleged that anti-Semit-
ic demonstrators in France
marched through the streets de-
manding that f ormer Premier
Blum be lynched.

The fate of approximately 300,-
000 Jewish refugees from Ger-
many and Nazi-occupied lands
now living in Switzerland caused
widespread concern in Jewish
circle s here with receipt of re-
ports that the position of the
Jewish refugees in Switzerland
h as become "very critical" since
the French capitulation.
The Nazi capture of France
has hemmed Switzerland in on
all sides by the armies of the
Axis powers who are wielding
greater influence in that country.
Jewish refugees, while intern-
ed, had been permitted to work
on Swiss fortifications and public
works. In return, they received
food and clothing and one franc
a day. As a result of increasing
Nazi pressure, the Swiss Govern-
ment has forbidden the Jewish
refugees to work.

that the Swiss gover-

nt, as a concession to Germ e
and Italy, may compel there afnuy -
gees to leave the country. In that
event, it was said, the refugees
would fall into Nazi hands.
The war has endangered also
the position
° the Swiss Jews.

of the Jews have closed
their shops and left Basle, fear-
ing that they would become the

JERUSALEM (Palcor Agency)
—Palestinian residents, informed
last week that the government
contemplates no conscription at
the present time, have been in-
vited to enlist in large numbers
in the Royal Air Force.
The officer in command of the
Royal Air Force announced that,
in agreement with His Majesty's
Government, opportunity to en-
list in the R. A. F. would be
afforded immediately for a "very
large number" of skilled and un-
skilled Palestinians and other
residents of the country, includ-
ing refugees from Czechoslo-
vakia, Poland, Holland and Bel-
gium.

LONDON (WNS) — Giving
the lie to earlier reports that
the Palestine Legion, including
460 Jews and 240 Arabs from the
Holy Land, stationed in the Magi-
not Line somewhere in France,
had been captured by the Nazi
Army, it was announced here
that the Palestine Legion has
arrived in London.

LISBON (WNS) — Hundreds
of Jewish refugees from fallen
France, including many promi-
nent Jewish pournalists, actors,
scientists and business men, have
arrived safely at Spanish Mor-
occo following a desperate flight
from France, it was reported
here. Many other Jewish refugees
were said to have reached French
M orocco.
The refugees left France in
specially-rented ships for which
they were compelled to pay enor-
mous sums. They were subjected
to all sorts of hardships since
all available boats were incredibly
overcrowded and did not carry
sufficient food or water.

Lady Mosley Arrested

LONDON (WNS) — Lady
Mosley, wife of the imprisoned
anti-Semitic British Fascist lead-
er and sister of Hitler's friend,
Unity Valkyrie Freeman-Mitford,
was arrested by Scotland Ya•d's
anti-fifth column squad as Brit-
ish leaders denied that peace ne-
gotiations with Nazi Germany
were in progress.
Lady Mosley, an active leader
of Sir Oswald Mosley's British
Union of Fascists, was, with her
younger sister, frequently in Ger-
many as the personal guest of
Hitler during the appeasement
era. Lady Mosley became so fa-
natically pro-Nazi that she train-
ed her two small sons to greet
visitors to her town house with
the Nazi salute and cries of
"Heil Hitle•!"

T. J. Gunn Seeks
Seat in Congress

Thomas J. Gunn, principal of
Central High School and a De-
troit educator for ninny years,
announced his candidacy for the
Republican nomination for Con-
gress in the 15th District.
Gunn declared himself opposed
to government lending "to Bra-
zil, China and other doubtful
credit countries under the delus-
ion that giving way the money
of Americans is sensible economic
direction of a proper desire to
stimulate American trade."
Congress, he believes, must be
on guard against "the tendency
to collect all possible powers into
the hands of the executive de-
partment."
Gunn was born in Canton
Township in 1884 and has been
a lifelong resident of Wayne
County. He attended Michigan
State Normal College and Detroit
Teachers College, received his
Master of Arts degree from the
University of Michigan and took
postgraduate work at Columbia
University and Harvard.
He was appointed an elemen-
tary school principal here in 1914.
He was first principal of the Foch
Intermediate School, was trans-
ferred to Durfee Intermediate,
