their service to the cause of a
fighting democracy, we re-enforce
with our appeal to the British
government, that the right to arm
should be given to the Jews of
Palestine, and we assure them that
what is humanly possible for us
to do in support of that great de-
fensive effort, we are prepared
to do."
Praising President Roosevelt
for his "valorous stand", Mr.
Lipsky declared that the victory
of Hitlerism would be a death
blow to morality and decency. "It
will mean that darkness has fall-
en and God is obscured and His
law has lost its power. The rule
of the steel fist will supplant the
code of morals. The virtues of
kinndness and good fellowship
will be forbidden and youth
will be trained into hardness
of muscle and heart. The good
Samaritan will be a symbol to
be derided. All the records of how
man has lifted himself out of the
mire of savagery, all conceptions
of justice and right will be torn
out of the books and will be
burned up and new records will
be written by order and to order.
Already in a large part of the
world, the figure of Jesus on the
Cross, that once aroused universal
pity and was the stimulation for
contrition and repentance, has
become the symbol of weakness
that should be eradicated by the
shedding of human blood."
Judge Morris Rothenberg ap-
pealed for full-hearted support
"for the measures of the gov-
ernment for the defense of our
country and the democratic way of
life, efforts which I am convinced
will not be calculated to draw
America into the war but to keep
the war out of America". At the
same time, he urged, "we must
increase our assistance to our
prostrate brethren in lands of
persecution and in lands of asy-
ium."

Discovery of Poems
Sheds Light on
Religious Life

NEW YOFK (WNS) — The
discovery of a large number
of Hebrew poems that were
written several hundred years
ago and which threw light on
the religious life of the Jewish
communities in different parts
of the then mighty Byzantine
Empire was announced, with
the appearance of the fifth
volume of "Horeb," a scien-
tific Hebrew publication devot-
ed to Jewish research and pub-
lished by the Teachers Institute
of Yeshiva College, in New
York City.
According to Dr. S. Bern-
stein, author of the article in
the "Horeb" in which the
poems appear, practically all
the poems and poets were un-
known heretofore and repre-
sents "an important poetical
contribution to the world of
literature."

Downtown Theaters

MICHIGAN — The Michigan
Theater has the great American
Kid, Mickey Rooney, with Judy
Garland in "Andy Hardy Meets
Debutante" with Lewis Stone and
Cecilia Parker topping the sup-
port. On the same program is
"The Captain Is a Lady" featur-
ing Charles Coburn, Billie Burke,
Virginia Grey and Beulah Bondi,

UNITED ARTISTS — Nel-
son Eddy and Jeanette MacDon-
old in "New Moon" are on the
same program with "A Bill of
Divorcement" featuring Adolphe
Menjou, Maureen O'Hara, Her-
bert Marshall and Fay Bainter.

FOX — The rollicking rhythms
of Cab Calloway and his famous
orchestra bring a jubilee of
swing to the Fox Theater stage
in person. On the screen the Fox
presents the riotous comedy ro-
mance, "Sailor's Lady," starring
Nancy Kelly and Jon Hall, who
made an instant climb to screen
fame in "Hurricane."

Bnai Brith Votes Another
$1,000 to Youth Aliyah:
Total Aid in two Years
Is $18,100

WASHINGTON, D. C.,—Bnai
Brith made its fourth contribu-
tion to Youth Aliyah in two years
when the executive committee,
ruling body of Bnai Brith be-
tween triennial conventions of
the Supreme Lodge, voted an ad-
ditional $1,000 to maintain ref-
ugee children from the European
lands of persecution in Palestine.
With this appropriation, the total
of Bnai Brith assistance to Youth
Aliyah has reached $18,100 since
1938.
These Bnai Brith contributions
make possible the maintenance
of 50 children in Palestine for
two years.

Million s of Germans Hoping Nazi
Armies Will be Beaten,
Says Dr. Mann

PRINCETON, N. J. (WNS)-
Dr. Thomas Mann, exiled German
novelist, told interviewers on the
occasion of his 65th birthday an-
niversary that millions of Gm e-
mans in Germany are hoping that
the Nazi armies will be beaten.
. The writer said that the salva-
tion of Germany after the de-
feat of Hitler, which he still ex-
pects, might be left to the Ger-
man people themselves and can-
not be arranged for them by the
Allies.

The cablegram expressed confi-
dence that American Jewry would
respond to the needs of the criti-
cal period in Zionist history.
A cable was also read from
David Ben Gurion expressing the
gravity of the situation and the
view that world Zionism must
now look largely to America for
leadership and aid. "As in time
of Nehemiah, we must fight with
one hand and build with other".
the cable stated.
The Zionist Executive sent
greetings from Jerusalem.
Cabled greetings were also read
from Zionist organizations of
Canada and Argentina and tele-
graph greetings from Leon Gell :
man, president of the Mizrachi
Organization.
A cabled message also arrived
from Menahem M. Ussishkin.
world president of the Jewish Na-
tional Fund.
