A most interesting report comes from
Haifa, through the Palcor News Agency,
to the effect that the emergency plans
of the Jewish Agency to facilitate immi-
gration to Palestine despite the closing of
the Mediterranean survived their first test
with the arrival of 17 refugees, the first to
enter since Italy declared war. The Jewish
immigrants had left Trieste originally and
had gone by the land route through Jugo-
slavia, Greece, Turkey and Syria. All of
them had fled from Poland.
The fate of Palestine is as uncertain as
the fate of the entire world. But while
there is life there is hope, and as long as
hopeful men and women carry on, they
will build and create.
The re-routing of immigration traffic to
Palestine by way of land rather than the
seas which has been closed temporarily
we hope, is proof of the virility of the
Zionist cause. This bit of news is one of
the most touching in the present situation.
It seems to say to the Jews of the world
that the remnant representing them in
the national rejuvenation effort is carrying
on without fear.

The New Zionist President

American Zionism enters upon a new
era with the election of a business man
to the presidency of the movement in this
country. Edmund I. Kaufmann's selection
for leadership at the annual convention
of the Zionist Organization, held in Pitts-
burgh during the past week-end, is un-
traditional. Mr. Kaufmann is a merchant.
Unlike previous presidents, he is neither
rabbi, nor lawyer, nor journalist, nor uni-
versity professor. His supporters, who
captured the convention over the protests
of veteran Zionist leaders, maintain that
he will draw into the movement the Amer-
ican Jewish youth and that he will attract
wealthy Jews whose support is sorely
needed at this time for Palestine's up-
building and defense.
Thus, the step taken by the American
Zionists is more than a departure from
established precedents. It it a great experi-
ment, and it will be watched with extreme
interest. "Reformation" has been promised
by Mr. Kaufmann's supporters, and the
Jews of America will hope and pray that
this "reformation" should mean the ulti-
mate achievement of the goal of making
Palestine secure and of creating in it that
great haven of refuge which is the hope
of hundreds of thousands of homeless
men, women and children who are now
at the mercy of the tyrants in totalitarian
countries.
American Jewry will give Mr. Kauf-
mann the necessary support to carry out
his objectives. Furthermore, his predeces-
sors who created a great movement in
this country, will surely stand by his side
and will give him their encouragement.
We join in wishing Mr. Kaufmann well in
the great responsibility he has assumed.

For a Jewish Army

It would be unfair and unsportmanlike
to say that Vladimir Jabotinsky and his
Revisionists are always wrong. He may
have been rash in advocating militarism
until now, but there is justification in the
proposal for the formation of specifically
Jewish units at this time. The Jewish Le-
gion was an important factor in the First
World War. A similar unit can be valuable
in the present conflict. We are a part of
the world struggle. We have been in this
war long before the Allies. We were the
first targets. We should be among those
who challenge the disseminators of hate
and destruction.
In his address at the mass meeting held
in the Manhattan Center in New York on
June 19, Col. John Henry Patterson, com-
mander of the Jewish Legion during the
last World War, urged the organization
of a Jewish unit. He pleaded for unity,
and he was right in doing so. He may
have exaggerated Jewish strength, when
he said "If I were a Jew, nothing would
give me greater pleasure than to show the
German criminals that the Jews of today
are men to be feared, just as their fore-
fathers were 2,000 years ago, when in
seven years of bitter warfare they shook
the mighty Roman Empire to its very
foundations." But it is correct to state
that as part 'of an organized world force .
that is determined to play a part in up-
rooting bigotry we can play an important
role.
