A Plea for Dr. Goldman's
Reorganization Plan

Editor, Detroit Jewish Chronicle:
There has been some publicity
in your columns in recent weeks
concerning Dr. Solomon Gold-
man's plan to reorganize the Zi-
onist Organization of America.
Progressive Zionists throughout
the country have become inspired
by the possibility that the Z.
0. A. will at last be given a re-
vitalization that it has sadly
needed for 20 years, and scores
of Zionist districts have pledged
their delegates to support Dr.
Goldman's plan at the national
convention in Pittsburgh, and
whatever candidates endorsed by
Dr. Goldman who will implement
that plan.
However, red herrings are now
being drawn across the path, and
the cry is being raised that Dr.
Goldman seeks to undermine
Zionism by creating dissension
at a time as critical as this.
I am convinced that the rank
and file of the Zionists of Amer-
ica are determined to go through
with Dr. Goldman and his plan,
and will refuse to become a
party to any compromise designed
to weaken the reorganization
effort.
Delegates who will attend the
national convention will be told
that they must work for "unity"
and that it is a shame to engage
in"controversy". Who has made
genuine unity impossible all these
years, but those very elements
which now seek to halt the re-
organization of the movement?
Dr. Goldman and the out-
standing group of Zionists who
stand with him, men like Rabbi
Heller, Louis Rocker, Rabbi Ed-
ward Israel, Rabbi Brickner,
Robert Szold, Dr. Friedenwald,
Judge Levinthal, and numerous
others, desire only the strength-
ening of the Z. 0. A., the en-
largement of its membership by
offering leadership opportunities
to new young blood, the increase
of youth and cultural activity,
and the improvement of the dig-
nity and prestige of the move-
ment.
Delegates should not be de-
ceived by the cry for "unity"
and should stand firm with the
liberal and progressive elements
at the national convention.

BUTZEL THANKS CHRONICLE

In a statement addressed to Jacob Margolis, publisher of
The Detroit Jewish Chronicle, Fred M. Butzel, chairman of
the 1940 Allied Jewish Campaign, thanks The Chronicle for
its part in the drive. Mr. Butzel write:
"It is my privilege, as chairman of the 1940 Allied
Jewish Campaign, to extend the appreciation of the
Campaign's 3,000 volunteer workers for the splendid
cooperation of The Detroit Jewish Chronicle in the re-
cent drive.
"Although we have learned to depend on your publi-
cation for sympathetic support in our annual fund-
rising task each year, we have not lost sight of the
value of the generous space allotted to the interpreta-
tion of th e Campaign's objectives and the story of its
progress, this year.
"We are grateful to you."
