Peiser Addresses
Gratz Graduates
On Thursday, Kurt Peiser, ex-
ecutive director of the Federa-
tion of Jewish Charities of Phil-
adelphia, formerly director of
the Jewish Welfare Federation
of Detroit, addressed the com-
mencement exercises of Gratz
College in Philadelphia, oldest
institution for the training of
Jewish teachers.
Mr. Peiser admonished
the
graduated:
"Do not separate
from the community." He said
in part:
"The scholar must be a part
of the community, sharing and
leading; otherwise he becomes a
parasite. One may be rich in
scholarship even as one may be
laden with worldly goods and in-
sofar as his part in the commun-
ity is concerned still 'be a drone
"There is, of course, exagger-
ation in the saying that the edu-
cated differ from the uneducated
as the living from the dead. It
is no exaggeration, however, to
maintain that a college differs
from a museum as the living from
the dead. If the completeness of
the museum is gauged by the
fullness with which it reflects the
past then the usefulness of the
college is gauged by the measure
of service it may be counted on
to give the community of which
it is a part. This gauge will be
applied with greater security in
the future than it has in the
past."
