A national effort was insti-
tuted by the Jewish War Vet-
erans of the United States to
encourage the display of the
American Flag on Flag Day,
June 14, has been extended by
the State Department of Michi-
gan of the Jewish War Veterans
of the United States to a week's
celebration, June 8 to 10, in ac-
cordance with the proclamation
issued by Mayor Edward J. Jef-
fries.
Dr. Robert Rosen, president
of the state department of the
J. W. V., has announced that
the Jewish War Veterans have
the cooperation of the following

the Republic, United Spanish-

American War Veterans, Disabled
American Veterans of the World
War, Catholic War Veterans of
the United States, Veterans of
Foreign Wars of the United

NEW YORK. (WNS)—In co-
operation with other patriotic
and civic organizations, Y. M.
H. A.'s, Y. W. H. A.'s and Jew-
ish Community Centers through-
out the United States will ob-
serve Flag Day on June 14, com-
memorating the 162nd anniver-
sary of the formal adoption of
the Stars and Stripes as the na-
tional emblem. Special cere-
monies will be held in number
of these Centers, bsed on Flag
Day programs issued by the Na-
tional Jewish Welfare Board.
Tribute will be paid during
these observances to the late Ben
Altheimer, former president of
Temple Beth El of New York
City, who is credited with being
the first to suggest and stimu-
late the observance of Flag Day
by religious and civic organiza-
tions. He was also active in the
movement which led to the estab-
lishment of Flag Day as a legal
holiday in a number of states.

On Sunday evening, June 16,
the Business and Professional
Women of Bnai Brith No. 240
will install newly elected officers
in the Brown Memorial Chapel of
Temple Beth El at 8 p. m.
Archie Cohen, past president
of District Grand Lodge No. 6
of Bnai Brith, will be the prin-
cipal speaker. Mr. Cohen is well
known to Detroit Bnai Brith,
having had an important part in
the district convention held here
last summer. He is one of Chi-
cago's communal leaders, active
in both Jewish and non-Jewish
circles.
Miss Flora Beckman, artist-
pupil of Mischa Kottler, will ren-
der several piano selections. Miss
Beckman recently appeared as
guest soloist with the State Nor-
mal Symphony Orchestra at
Ypsilanti.
Following the installation, re-
freshments will be served in the
social hall of Temple Beth El.

gency fund in behalf of Rabbi
Shloma Slavin, known as Shloma
Masmid, the dean of Rabbinical
College of Stolin, now occupied
by the Russian government. He is
in danger and is suffering hun-
ger. A committe to help him, or-
ganized in Detroit for this emer-
