IMMORAL EUROPE
BLAMED FOR WAR

Rabbi Rosenthal Addresses Local
Jewish Congress

Rabbi Rudolph M. Rosenthal,
of Cleveland, speaking at the
monthly forum meeting of the
Detroit chapter of the American
Jewish Congress on May 23, at
the Jewish Community Center,
described the importance of plan-
ning for the peace that will come
after the war and pointed to the
significant role in planning play-
ed' by the World and American
Jewish Congresses.
Outlining existing conditions,
Rabbi Rosenthal, who was intro-
duced at the meeting by Rabbi
Joshua S. Sperka, declared that
the bigots start persecuting the
Jews but end with all peoples,
and pointed as proof to the stat-
us of kings and queens who are
now refugees. He declared that
"Immoral Europe forgot the basic
human laws and could not have
peace."
Rabbi Rosenthal, who is the
chairman of the Cleveland divi-
sion of the Jewish Congress, said
that Jews reject the idea of sur-
plus population and that the
leaders in Europe will have to
recognize that 9,000,000 Jews
cannot be moved and that they
are in their respective countries to
stay. Declaring that this is also
a basic principile for Zionists,
Rabbi Rosenthal said "you can
not build Palestine on broken
people, on derelicts," and that
it will be necessary to empha-
size that Jews must be given a
chance to live a normal life and
to build Palestine with a strong

element of constructive pioneers.
He added that the World Jewish
Congress challenges the panic in
Jewish life and offers statesman-
ship.
At this meeting, Henry Fen-
ster was elected to represent De-
troit at a midwestern American
Jewish Congress gathering to be
held in Chicago June 16 and 17,
when Dr. Stephen S. Wise will
be honored at a testimonial ben-
quet. Max Black was appointed
chairman of a special committee
to study the dangers of pro-Nazi
groups in Detroit.
