Immigration and the War

Those who are becoming panic-stricken
over the possible outcome of the war
should read the significant statement
issued by Dr. Abba Hillel Silver and Dr.
Jonah B. Wise, co-chairmen of the United
Jewish Appeal, regarding plaits to facili-
tate the immigration of refugees in the
event that the struggle spreads to the
Mediterranean and thus further compli-
cates matters.
It is interesting, and encouraging, to
know that alternative channels of entry
to Palestine are planned ; that a special
agreement has been reached with Russia
and Great Britain to send refugees from
Stockholm and Vilna to Odessa or by way
of Constanza on the Black Sea.
The work of reconstruction and colon-
izaton goes on—in Palestine, in South
American countries, wherever there are
avenues of escape. The one possible ob-
stacle in the way of the rescue work is
the lack of funds. It remains the obliga-
tion of the only free Jewish community
in the world, American Jewry, to provide
the means for the great work of saving
lives. The pity is that large Jewish com-
munities like Detroit, and other Jewish
centers, fail to subscribe their complete
campaign goals. There are many who can
still save the situation by adding to the
pledges they have already made. We
hold the fate of millions in our hands,
and it would be a pity and a crime for
American Jews to be blind to the reality
of the situation and to turn a deaf ear
to the appeals of the millions of dis-
tressed, persecuted and homeless men,
women and children.

Annual Flag Day

The setting aside by Mayor Jeffries of
the week of June 8 to 14 for the celebra-
tion of the anniversary of adoption of the
emblem of the United States serves to re-
call the fact that the inauguration of
Flag Day as an institution was due to the
efforts of an eminent Jew—Benjamin
Altheimer.
Mr. Altheimer, as immigrant from Ger-
many, urged the adoption of June 14 as a
day annually to be observed as Flag Day
ill commemoration of the action taken by
the American Congress on June 14, 1777,
to approve of the Stars and Stripes as our
flag, as proposed by Betsy Ross. Since
June 14, 1912, when Flag Day was first
observed in two St. Louis churches, Mr.
Altheimer's idea became reality, and Flag
Day is now a national institution observed
throughout the land by official proclama-
tion repeated annually by our Presidents.
The first Presidential' proclamation was
made by President Wilson on June 14,
1915.
Observance of Flag Day assumes great
significance at this time. The Stars and
Stripes represent the only remaining cita-
del of freedom on this earth. Together
with our neighbors, the smaller countries
on this continent, this great land is hold-
ing up, as high as we can, the flag of
liberty and justice. Flag Day should be a
signal to the rest of the world that free-
dom can not be completely destroyed and
that mankind's best hopes for good gov-
ernment and just living will yet be
realized.

Good for You, Rachel!

Walter Winchell reveals that "the firm
in Germany which was to publish Rachel
Lyman Field's 'All This, and Heaven Too'
asked her if they couldn't drop the
'Rachel' from 111. name for the German
edition as it sounded non-Aryan. Miss
Field sent back a sizzling cable telling
them to go to the opposite of the place
named in her title." Which goes to prove
that Americans are retaining their sanity
and that Nazi propaganda has captured
neither the hearts nor the minds of people
with a sense of justice.

Mexico is quite worried about a
sudden influx of thousands of
German "tourists" . • . It doesn't
seem quite logical that a country
waging a total war would let out
so many of its able-bodied citi-

to tell you that if you ever see

comodations, etc., through his
German travel Agency, but he
doesn't have any ready cash to
speak of.

The Rev. Charles E. Coughlin is off the
air—at least until next October or Novem-
ber. But his evil work continues to do
damage, through his newspaper and pam-
phlets. Therefore, it would be folly to
forget him. He is typical of the enemies of
American fair play and of the fifth col-
umn group who are certain to crop up
whenever and wherever they can.
It is encouraging, therefore, to learn
that the annual report of the Social Serv-
ice Commission of the New York East
Conference of the Methodist Church
warns Protestants to ignore appeals of
the Christian Front and to "do all in their
power to expose and combat it"; com-
mends "our Roman Catholic brethren,
both clergy and laity, who have repudi-
ated Father Coughlin's fascistic and anti-
Semitic activities," and carries additional
warning in the following statement: "We
have witnessed the alarming growth of a
new, vicious anti-Semitic, anti-democratic
movement in the United States. The cen-
ter and inspiration of this new drive is
the Rev. Charles E. Coughlin and his THE ZIONIST FRONT
storm-troop organization, the so-called
Christian Front."
It's beginning to look as if Dr.
Continuing, the report said: "This is Chaim Weizmann will be ma-

The Nazis and Their Income

It has been charged that leaders of the
Nazi regime have invested large sums of
money in foreign banks in preparation for
the day when they may have to escape
from Germany. A cable to the New York
Times from Paris gives a clue to one of
the stock investments made by the Nazi
ace propagandist Goebbels. The cable in-
forms us:

PARIS., May 18—The French State today
ordered blocking of 100 shares of stock in
the Suez Canal Company, on which interest
wa s being paid to Dr. Joseph Goebbels, Ger-
man Propaganda Minister.
According to evidence submitted to a
French court, Dr. Goebbel s was getting his
payments from this great Allied corporation
through a bank in Luxembourg.
The shares were blocked and the dividends
will cease.

It may well be that the Nazi chieftains
did not expect this sort of block-outs. But
now that the war is on in earnest it is to
be expected that all available weapons
will be used against Hitler, the Hitlerites
and Hitlerism. To ferret out the Nazis
will mean also to expose their misdeeds
and their investments. Their end will be
a most ignoble one.
