ing February, 1940, amounted to
£4,985,000, of which £1,487,000
was spent on Police and Prisons,
£233,000 on the Transjordan
Frontier Force and £4,000 on
defense, which represented a to-
tal of 34 per cent on security.
Non-recurrent public works ex-
penditure amounted to £439,000.
Government revenue, exclud-
ing grants-in-aid from the Brit-
ish Exchequer, was £4,137,000;
thus a surplus of £994,000 was
yielded. The government grants
from London amounted to £1,-
806,000.
At the outset of 1937 there
were 68 local banks registered in
addition to the six foreign banks
incoprorated abroad (Barclay's
Bank, Anglo-Palestine Bank, Ot-
tomon Bank, Holland Union Bank,
Banco di Roma and Polska Kasa
Opieki). By the beginning of
1940, the number had dropped
to 30.
The decline came about part-
ly owing to the financial crisis
which hit some of these institu-
tions, but particularly a result
of the new legislation which has
made more severe the conditions
government institutions enjoy-
ing the privileges of banks.
As the result of a generous
contribution of Mrs. Vera Bryce

ing in Jerusalem and of contri-
butions by the Wolfsohn Fund
and the Bitzur Corporation by
way of loan. a new wing is to be
