The season is open for De-
troit's own Irish Sweepstakes now
that the horses are galloping in
the 43-day spring meeting at the
Detroit Race Track.
The "Sweepstakes" is the
Daily Double, a type of wager
that has always attracted the
long shot shooters among the
racing fans because it offers. a
lot for a little if you are lucky
or smart enough to pick the win-
ners of the first two races.
The Daily Double pool is a
separate pari-mutuel pool and
all money wagered in the Double
goes into the pot to be divided
among those who pick the first
two winners. This is usually a
difficult task because the first
two races are usually events for
horses which have either never
won or haven't been to the win-
ner's circle in months.
Detroit fans have shared in
some big double pay-offs. Hardly
a season goes by which does not
see some box-ca• number pay-
offs. None has yet reached the
record of $10,772.40 paid last
season at Chicago's Washington
P,Irk when one man took the
pool, but there have been some
comfortable ones just the same.
