Fresh Air Camp
To Open June 24
The Fresh Air Society an-
nou nces the opening of the 1940
season of the Fresh Air Camp on
June 24. There will be accommo-
dations this year for 100 girls
and 130 boys from 6 to 17 years
o f age. The camp will again be
direction of Irwin
under the
Shaw who will be assisted by Irv-
in g Rosen and Sara Smith for
the fourth consecutive year.
Senior Unit a Success
Last season saw the inaugura-
tion of a new senior unit for
30 boys between the ages of 14
and 17. Designed to meet the
need for a camp serving boys of
high school age, it proved to be
uccessful. By encouraging
very s
a great measure of self-govern•
merit the boys are able to plan
their own program and partici-
pate in activities which appeal
particularly to them.
Canoe Trips Added to Program
Through the generosity of
Harry Jacobson, two canoes are
being added to the camp's al-
ready fine waterfront equipment
and several canoe trips on the
Huron River are being planned
for senior boys and girls.
The campers are organized into
small decentralized groups whose
program of activities are so ar-
ranged as to best meet the needs
of the children in each age group.
The counselor staff which cares
for these children is receiving
special training at weekly ses-
sions which began April 6 and
will continue until camp opens.
Campers' Health Safeguarded
The health of the children is
safeguarded, first, by a pre-camp
examinatio; second, by providing
quality food, prepared by an ex-
pert cook in modern Kosher
kitchens; third, by having doctor
and registered nurse always in
residence; and fourth, by main-
taining a completely equipped
clinic which makes immediate
treatment possible under all cir-
cumstances.
