Mother's Day

Mother's Day has assumed a place of
importance on our calendar. It is an occa-
sion not only for honoring mother, but
also for utilizing the occasion to do good
as a tribute to Mother.
Mother's Day, to be observed this Sun-
day, should serve as an excellent oppor-
tunity to inspire greater giving to worthy
causes—in honor of Mother. Occurring as
the day does during the Allied Jewish
Campaign, it should stimulate special con-
tributions for the important current mercy
drive, in addition to the traditional other
founds which have previously benefited
on Mother's Day, including Palestine tree-
planting, etc.
It is an interesting coincidence that the
date of this year's Mother's Day observ-
ance happens also to be the 120th anni-
versary of the birth of Florence Nightin-
gale, the founder of Modern Nursing
Service, and Sunday, May 12, has there-
fore been set aside as Nt.tional Hospital
Day. This coincidence serves to add sig-
nificance to the great contributions to hu-
man service made by women. It adds glory
to the magic interchangeable names
Woman and Mother.

Pathetic Mr. Thorkelson

Congressman J. Thorkelson of Mon-
tana, a name that has become synony-
mous with Coughlinism, (un)Christian
Frontism and Nazism, presents a pathetic
figure. Day in and day out he extends his
remarks in the Congressional Record, asks
for permission to speak for a minute and
to extend his remarks and later distrib-
utes the trash he gathered as important
documents under the imprint of the United
States Government.
But Rep. Thorkelson has swallowed too
much nonsense that has been fed to him
from the same source that seeks to jus-
tify Coughlin and to whitewash the Nazis.
The result was that he was placed on the
spot one day last week when Congress-
man Sabath of Illinois inserted in the
Record a document prepared by the Non-
Sectarian Anti-Nazi League to Champion
Human Rights disproving the contentions
of the Montana Congressman and describ-
ing the vicious circle of anti-Semitism and
pro-Nazism in which he continues to
spread his poison at the expense of Ameri-
can taxpayers.
But in spite of his having been called
to task on the floor of the United States
House of Representatives, Rep. Thorkel-
son delivered a speech in which he again
made capital for his destructive ideas by
seeking to condemn the offer of a million
dollars for the capture of Hitler, made by
Samuel Harden Church, president of the
Carnegie Institute, in behalf of 50 wealthy
Pittsburghers, as pro-British propaganda.
The method used by Rep. Thorkelson to
color the truth was evidenced again in
this speech when he spoke of this offer
as being "for murder and kidnaping". The
truth is that the offer by Dr. Church was
that Hitler be brought to justice before
the League of Nations "alive and un-
hurt." But this is typical also of Thorkel-
son's reference to William Bishop, one of
the 16 accused Christian Front leaders,
as an agent of the British government,"
in a statement he inserted in the Con-
gressional Record on April 30. It has
been charged that Bishop is none other
than Major Wilhelm Bishop of the Ger-
man army, and his activities in behalf of
Nazism are the central points at issue in

from the troubled Old World .. .
Maybe it's because Mussolini rea-
lizes that it was the foresight of
a Jew, Benjamin Disraeli, which
gave Britain her hold on the Suez
Canal, that II Duce so readily
joined in with Hitler in his anti-
Semitic policy . . . Governmental
circles in Great Britain are in
the process of changing their at-
titude towards the formation of
a Jewish legion . . . Recent de-
velopments make it appear that
eventually all the man-power Eng-
land can muster will be required
for this war to a finish . . . De-
fense counsel for Herschel Gryn-
span, the Jewish youth who killed
a Nazi consular attache in Paris
in 1938, is sure his client will be
acquitted . . . The defense ex-
pects to prove, at Grynspan's
forthcoming trial, that the at-
tache in question was a Nazi
spy, and that Grynspan's assas-
sination of him was a service to
la belle France.

The new immigration schedule for Pal-
estine, granting permission to 9,060 Jews
to enter Palstine for a six-month period,
is another betrayal of a sacred trust by
the British government.
At a time when millions are clamoring
for a home, when most of the Jews in
European countries find themselves under
the heels of tyrants, the British govern-
ment is exacting vengeance from the Jew-
ish people for the guilt of desiring a home
f_or the persecuted and dispossessed.
Disregarding existing horrors and ig-
noring the prevailing tragedies which
should move her to greater cooperation
with the Jewish people for the settlement
of large numbers of unfortunates in Pal-
estine, Great Britain is instead issuing
threats that what has been considered
"illegal" immigration will be deducted • THIS AND THAT

The Un-American Front

Testimony heard at the trial of the ac-
cused 16 members of the Christian Front,
points to a real menace to America from
a group that has been inspired by Nazis
and clerical anti-Semites. It is evident that
the chief source of material for the men-
acing group that threatened the overthrow
of our government is Germany, with a
smattering of inspiration from bigots who
hate the present administration enough to
seek the overthrow of our form of po-
litical life. The constant reference to
"Jewish influence" in the New Deal is an
indication of the type of bigotry that is
attacking the American ideal of fair play
through the Christian Front.
It is futile, of course, to attempt to
argue with anti-Semites over the unfair
charge of Jewish "control" over any-
thing, whether it is government jobs or
business or the professions. The untruth
of these accusations has been pointed out
time and again. In the present instance,
the law courts will take their course.
There is a threat of terrorism from the
ranks of the Christian Front, its allied
Coughlinist group, the revived Ku Klux
Klan and numerous other subversive ele-
ments. All of them have derived courage
from the Nazi propagandists. All must
meet their doom in the course of time,
since the American principle of justice
must triumph over them.

A rising young newspaperman
is Jerry Finkelstein, who has
been doing well with his "Civil
Service Leader," a paper he start-
ed last year in competition with
the long-established civil service
news weekly "The Chief."
Only the war prevented the
French Government from conven-
ing a World Congress of Jewish
Scholars at Troyes, the home of
Rashi, and the reconstruction in
that town of the Synagogue of
Worms, which the Nazis burned
during the 1938 pogrom . . . It
was at the Worms Synagogue
that Rashi studied in his youth.

. . The story of Adolf Hitler,
from his birth to his expected hit-
ter end, is the theme of a new
film made in France, aptly titled
"After Mein Kampf, My Crimes"
. . . If you've been reading Pierre
van Paassen's s:rial on Hanussen,
Hitler's favorite soothsayer of the
early 1930's, in Redbook Maga-
zine, you'll be interested to know
that Adolf still times his impor-
tant moves according to the horo-
scope cast (if that's the proper
term) by the Jewish "necroman-
cer" . . . At least, that's the
story current in astrological cir-
cles hereabouts . . . Van Paas-
sen's second book, dealing with
the present European situation,
will be in the bookstores within
the next four months .

• WE HEAR

Meyer W. Weisgal, director gen-
eral of the Palestine Pavilion at
the World's Fair, is seriously con-
sidering the founding of a League
of Dispossessed Nations at Flush-
ing Meadows . . He believes
that the Jewish Palestine exhibit,
representing a people whose coun-
try was taken over by a power-
ful tyrant nearly 19 centuries be-
fore Hitler's anschluss of Austria,
Czechoslovakia, Poland, Denmark,
et al., should take the initiative
in a project linking the exhibits
of all the dispossessed nations at
the Fair.
Note to Jewish editors: 'Vladi-
mir Jabotinsky, who is officially
supposed to be in South America,
is still in this country . . . He's
negotiating with a well known
publisher for the bringing out of
his memoirs.
An interesting conference is
taking place in New York this
week-end, under the auspices of
the Council Against Intolerance
in America . . The subject, to
be discussed by teachers and rep-
resentatives of parents' organiza-
tions, is "Tolerance through Edu-
cation" . . . The cause of toler-
ance, incidentally, is being vastly
furthered by the "new citizens"
ceremonies sponsored by the U. S.
Immigration and Naturalization
Service, and described in a pam-
phlet recently published by that
service . . • And you'll be inter-
ested to know that one of the
people most active in the Depart-
ment's work of creating apprecia-
tion for the immigrant's cultural
contributions to the U. S. A. is
o orold friend Bernard G. Rich-
ards.
