said, Jews will come with cre-
dentials based on the record of
sacrifices we were ready to make
on a par with other peoples. De-
voting the concluding portion of
his address to a description of
Jewish achievements in Palestine,
Dr. Silver said: "I am convinced
that Palestine is needed for the
survival and greatness of the
Jewish people. That little coun-
try on the eastern shore of the
Mediterranean has given a home
to more than half of all the
Jewish refugees in the world.
Palestine is the only place where
Jewish life was completely un-
folding and establishing itself. It
has been the one answer to the
despair and chaos of the world.
A no more superb epic has ever
been written in the history of
any people than the one we have
written in Palestine."
Fred M. Butzel, chairman of
the 1940 Allied Jewish Campaign,
presided at the dinner, and de-
scribed the objectives of the
drive. He also spoke of the man-
ner in which the refugees have
become integrated in the life of
the various communities making
great contributions wherever they
have settled.
Isidore Sobeloff, executive di-
rector of the Jewish Welfare
Federation and of the Allied Jew-
ish Campaign, spoke briefly, re-
porting on the results of efforts
for the drive up to the night
of the dinner. He reported that
a total of $451,861 was raised,
and that these contributions rep-
resented an increase of 16 per
cent over last year's gifts by the
same donors. Mr. Sobeloff warned
that if the rest of the prospects
give only in this proportion that
it will be impossible to raise the
entire quota.
Mr. Sobeloff was lauded by Mr.
Butzel as combining the talents
for sensing what the people want
with a great capacity for carry-
ing out his tasks. Dr. Silver also
took occasion to laud Mr. So-
beloff's ability as a campaign di-
rector.
The large audience at the din-
ner stood for a minute in tribute
to the memory of Joseph H. Ehr-
lich who ranked as one of the
most devoted workers in local
campaigns for more than 20
years.
The invocation at the dinner
was given by Dr. Leo M. Frank-
lin. The meeting after the dinner
concluded with the singing of
"America," the audience being
led by Mrs. Abraham Cooper.

this luncheon meeting and Mrs.
Abraham Srere, chairman of the
Women's Division campaign, gave
the report. Mrs. Henry Wineman
spoke briefly and Mrs. J. H. Ehr-
lich delivered a brief address de-
scribing women's share in relief
work. Louis C. Blumberg, Simon
Shetzer and Irving Blumberg re-
ported for the three major divi-
sions in the campaign.
