MAURICE SCHWARTZ

the "Brothers Ashkenazi" which
entertained Yiddish theatergoers
a few seasons ago, Maurice
Schwartz, outstanding actor of
the Yiddish stage, will come to
Detroit in his latest stage tri-
umph, "Salvation" by Sholem
Asch, author of the best seller
"The Nazarene."
"Salvation" or "Der Thilem
Yid" as it is called in Yiddish,
is steeped in tradition and sim-
ple philosophy of the Talmudic
scholars of the 16th century. As
in all of his plays, Mr. Schwartz
has surrounded himself with a
stellar cast of performers, all
members of his Yiddish Art Thea-
ter, the group which discovered
Paul Muni, John Garfield and
other great names. The support-
ing cast of the Yiddish Art Thea-
ter that will assist Mr. Schwartz
are Isidore Casher, Judith Abra-
banell, Anna Apel, Gustow
Schacht, Julius Adler, Abraham
Teitilbatim, Rebecca 'Weintraub,
David Opatoshu, Morris • Strass-
berg and a cast of 40.
The entire production, scenery,
light effects, costumes as pro-
duced in the Yiddish Art Thea-
ter will be seen at the Wilson
Theater. Incidental music is by
Sholom Secunda. and dances by
Lillian Shapiro.

At the sixth annual meeting
of the Jewish Community Center
held Wednesday, April 24, the
following were elected to the
board of directors for a term of
three years: Mesdames Joseph H.
Ehrlich, Leon H. Frank, Samuel
R. Glogower, Joseph W. Welt;
Messrs. H. C. Broder, David J.
Cohen, Maurice Glasier, Samuel
H. Rubiner and James Wineman.
The following were re-elected
to honorary directorship for a
term of one year: Clarence H.
Enggass, Rabbi Leon Fram, Dr.
Leo M. Franklin, Dr. A. M.
Hershman, Isidore Sobeloff, Rab-
bi Joshua S. Sperka, Abraham
Srere and Henry Wineman.

with Mr. Golub's songs. It was a

Club. Herman Jacobs, executive

the Center, delivered the annual
report.
At a meeting of the board of
directors, held jointly with the
annual meeting, the present of-
ficers were selected for the com-
ing year: President, Henry Mey-
ers; vice presidents, Mrs. Samuel
R. Glogower and Saul Caulson;
secretary, Mrs. Joseph M. Welt;
treasurer, Saul R. Levin.
The entertainment of the eve-
ning consisted of a reading by
Miss Reva Reichman of Dorothy
Parker's "The Waltz." Featured
also was a skit taken from the
recent musical show "Thumbs
Up," entitled "Abraham, Isaac
and Jacobs." The participants
were Seymour Ede', Nathan Shaf-
kind and Hyman Paransky.

of the composer. Mr. Golub him-
self sang with his usual melodic
sweetness the tender "Es Bet
di Welt," "A Liber Gast" and
many other favorites that have

been acclaimed by his enthusias-
tic audiences. The program was
brought to a fitting close with
his impressive song "Nacht" in
which the entire audience spon-
taneously joined and became a
singing ensemble.
Shoshana Brooks, soprano, in-
terpreted beautifully some of
Golub's best known songs. She
was recalled again and again to
the platform after singing "Mein
Gerl," the newest of Golub's
compositions.
Aaron Rosenberg, acting as
master of ceremonies, opened the
program with a humorous inter-
pretation of the Third Seder and
introduced Dan F•ohman, Rebec-
ca Katzman-Frohman and Sadie
Cooper, violinist, who gave a
splendid rendition of Mendels-
sohn's Trio in D Minor.

Congress Youth Division to
Meet Monday

Ford Fair Exhibit

The Youth Division of the
American Jewish Congress will
meet at the home of Miss Rhoda
Levenson, 2240 Sturtevant Ave.,
at 8:30 p. m. on Monday. Those
interested in joining the Youth
Division are invited.

Miss Anne Wiener, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. William Wiener of
2213 Atkinson Ave., who has
been a student for the past three
years with the School of Ameri-
can Ballet, New York, has won
a contract for six months to

Congregation Shaarey Zedek,
at its annual meeting held on
April 25, re-elected Isaac Shet-
zer, president. Mr. Shetzer serves
his second term in the present
cycle and had served for three
terms as president previously.
Other officers were elected as
follows: Morris H. Blumberg,
vice-president; Charles Rubiner,
treasurer; Harry M. Shulman,
secretary.
The following were elected
members of the board for a
three-year term: David S. Fried-
man, Judge Harry B. Keidan,
Abraham Srere and Meyer Stone.
Dr. Leonard Sidlow was elected
to the board for a two-year term.
Reports were submitted at this
meeting by the officers and com-
mittee chairmen. An encouraging
report was submitted by the edu-
cational committee pointing to
progress achieved by the Shaarey
Zedek Schools during the past
year.
