World Sensation in 1858
NEW YORK. (WNS) — News
of Father Mortara
of the dath
e
in Belgium recalled the famous
abduction case which was a cause
celebre in the 19th century and
which contributed, according to
some historians, to the downfall
of the Papal States.
Edgar Mortara was taken from
his home in 1858 by Papal
Guards. According to the Jewish
Encyclopedia, servant in
Encyclopedia,
Mortara household confessed to
a priest that she had the child
baptized. The priest reported the
case to Rome, and the Congre-
gation of the Inquisition ordered
that the child be taken from his
home and educated as a Chris-
tian.
At the age of 18 , the boy de-
clared his intention of remaining
a Catholic. Catholic sovereigns,
including Emperor Francis Jos-
eph of Austria and Napoleon III
of France wrote personal letters
to Pope Pius IX, beseeching him
not to defy public opinion by
holding the boy. Sir Moses Mon-
tefiore made a special mission to
Rome without avail.
Mortara was educated in a
convent, and was often paraded
through the Ghetto. Later, he
entered the Augustine Order,
adopting the name of Pius. He
preached before the Vatican
Council and was sent as a mis-
sionary to Germany and to Ital-
ian Catholics in New York.
