Goering and a Home-Made Nazi Joke

Prelates at the Holy See have a great burden
of work and anxiety these days, but they have
not forgotten how to laugh. There is one joke
going the rounds now that has caused great
a of State, and from
amusement in the Secretariat
there has gone into Roma n diplomatic circles.
It appears that Chancellor Hitler was dissatisfied
with the results of Foreign Minister Joachim von
Ribbentrop's visit to the Vatican, so he sent
Field Marshal Hermann Goering down. A few
days later, so the story goes, he got the following
telegram from his Field Marshal: "Have placed
Holy See under German protection. All Prelates
in concentration camp. Pope has fled. Vatican in
flames. Cardinal's robe suits me beautifully."
This is a splendid addition to the rich collection
of Goering jokes. But it is much more significant
than the previous ones because it comes from
Rome and it has its origin in the Holy See of
the Catholic Church.
When the world will celebrate the end of
Nazism, the Museums of Horror will be featured
by photographs of Hermann Goering, wearing
all the fancy uniforms he can pick up and toying
with planes with which he threatened to gain
control of the universe. And the legend under-
neath the picture will be to the effect that this
destructive genius sought to absorb everything
and was crushed by the weight of his uniforms,
his medals—and his demoniacal ego.
