sistance to the 170,000 refugees
in their midst. In both neutral
and belligerent countries the de-
mands of national securityy have
drained the resources formely
available for the purpose of
housing and feeding the refugees.
To prevent them from becoming
a public charge, its which case
many would face deportation,
the Joint Distribution Commit-
tee has had to assume a larger
share of the burden of caring
for German Jews in these coun-
tries.
In German-controlled Poland
the Joint Distribution Committee
is feeding 500,000 Jews daily,
providing shelter for 100,000 and
caring for 30,000 children, many
of whom have been orphaned by
the war. In the first weeks of the
German invasion the J. D. C.
representatives in Warsaw risked
death to organize systematic
emergency relief measures and

Austrian Refugee Open "Austria
Office" to Further Anti-
Nazi Struggle
LONDON. (WNS) —A group
of Austrian refugees, including
socialists, monarchists and other
anti-Nazi elements, banded to-
gether Isere to establish an "Aus-
tria Office" for the purpose of
contacting anti-Nazis in their
home country and spreading
through them anti-Nazi propa-
ganda.
Sir George Franckenstein, for-
mer Austrian Minister to Great
Britain, who is now a British
citizen, told reporters after the
meeting that "we are getting in-
formation out of Austria. I think
there can be no doubt that the
majority of the people in Austria
are opposed to a Nazi regime."
Harry Hershfield, columnist,
cartoonist and one of New York's
most popular masters of cere-
monies, is now writing a book,
which he's expecting to call
"Anybody's Biography".
