BALTIMORE (WNS) — The
27,000-ton freighter Panamanian,
owned by Arnold Bernstein, for-
merly one of Germany's most
important shipping magnates
who is now trying to start anew
in the United States, was mys-
teriously flooded and sunk as she
lay in Baltimore harbor.
The ship was taking on freight
for a trip through beligerent
waters to England. Spokesmen
for the Bernstein Line, the Corn-
pania Transaltanticia Centro
Americana, admitted that sabo-
tage was "very possible," but
added that carelessness in refuel-
ing the vessel was a more prob-
able cause of the flooding.
Mr. Bernstein, who once op-
erated two successful lines, plans
to inaugurate direct freight serv-
ice between_ Baltimore and Eng-
land.
