Caucasian Jews observe the Seder ceremony with a
unique custom. Several families assemble together in the
home of their Chacham (Wise Man). In the course of the
services, an impressive dramatization is enacted: A knock-
ing, sounded by one of the young men masquerading as a
poor traveler from the Holy Land, is heard at the door.
When no answer is forthcoming, the young man calls and
asks for permission to enter. Following a lively conversation
in which the traveler gives no evidence of the fact that he
is a Jew, he is admitted into the room. He brings hearty
greetings from the sages of Jerusalem and assures the
gathering of the speedy redemption of all Israel.

Passorer Greetings

At the conclusion of the Seder service, each male Jew
of Morocco places a staff and pack over his shoulder and
rushes into the street shouting these words of the Haggadah:
"In this manner our forefathers went out of Egypt, their
kneading troughs bound up in their clothes upon their
shoulders."

Another song of the Haggadah begins with: "Who
knows one? I have one : One is the Eternal, who is above
heaven and earth," and continues asking and entering ques-
tions up to thirteen. It is said that this was written especially
as a children's song, to keep them interested in the Seder
as it draws to a close. .

PALESTINE ECONOMIC COMMITTEE
CALLS FOR FAIR EQUALIZATION
OF COMMERCE OF U. S. AND ZION

The American Economic Com-
mittee for Palestine, which has
until now particularly confined
itself to investigation of economic
conditions in Palestine, and to
giving information relative to
these matters, has now decided to
widen its sphere of activities par-
ticularly with reference to aiding
the increase of Palestinian ex-
ports to this country.
In a statement recently pub-
lished by this economic commit-
tee, it has pointed out the trade
relations between America and
Palestine as being quite abnormal.
Palestine imports from America
five times as much as it exports
to the States. For example, in
1938, Palestine bought over $5,-
000,000 worth of merchandise
here, whereas merchandise im-
ported from Palestine to Amer-
ica for that year was hardly
$500,000. It is important to note
that this last figure was reached
because of the import of potash
from Palestine to the value of
$350,000. And, by the way, 1938
was the first year that the Dead
Sea potash was exported to
America.
In view of the above mentioned
facts, the committee has decided
to inaugurate a campaign both
to educate the public in these
problems, and to acquaint them
with the facts in order to help
to some extent at least to
straighten out the unfair propor-
tion of imports and exports rela-
tive to Palestine and the United
States; and it is hoped that the
public will fulfill its duty by
purchase of Palestine products
whereby a normal trade exchange
can occur.
The committee points out that
Palestine products are admirably
suited for the American mar-
ket, both as far as their qualities
and their prices are concerned.
They compare favorably with the
best imported merchandise sold
in this country and, for example,
the Famous Palestinian Carmel
Wines are in every way as fine
and as competitive a product as
imoprted wines of Southern Eu-
ropean states. The same applies
also to Palestinian honey, marma-
lades, chocolates, candies, and
other food products. Of course
the artistic silver filigree work
of Palestine is deservedly re-
nowned, and in recent years a
wide range of novelties and
jewelry has been produced by
Jewish labor in Palestine.
At the request of the Pales-
tinian Societe Cooperative Vig-
neronne of the Baron de Roth-
schild Grandes Caves of Rishon-
le-Zion, Zichron Jacob, and Rech-
ovoth, Ltd., the producers of the
Famous Carmel Wines, the
American Economic Committee
for Palestine is cooperating with
the Palestine House, Inc., of 10
W. 28th St., New York City, and
its president, Rabbi I. M. Kowal-
sky, the sole accredited agents
for the Carmel Wines, in order
to increase the import of Pales-
tinian wines to America.
It is the opinion of the com-
mittee that the larger consump-
tion of Palestinian wine would
greatly aid the improvement of
the economic conditions in Pales-
tine, and the committee has un-
dertaken an extensive campaign

Sincere Holiday Greetings

It's grand to be a playwright
. . . Here's Moss Hart, who re-
cently spent a lot of money get-
ting himself psychoanalyzed—
and now hopes to get it back
with a new play whose heroine,
is under psychoanalytical treat-
ment. . . Another new play, a
musical, has been readied by Marc
Blitzstein . . . It'll be called
"No for an Answer" . . . Louis
Schafer, producer of "Pins and
Needles," started life as a news-
pap e r in a n, having occupied,
among other posts, that of labor
editor of the Jewish Daily For-
ward.

Next time you hear the coron-
er in a movie thriller announce
in solemn tones that the victim
has been poisoned with "pyroxy-
genicine" or something of the
sort don't rush to the drug store
to ask for that chemical to send
to Hitler in a chocolate bar . . .
All the fancy names used for
lethal toxins in the films are
phonies thought up by Dr. Leo
M. Schulman, whose job it is to
create plausible-sounding words
of that sort.
