David Baker Wins
Speech Contest
In River Rouge

David Baker, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Max Baker of River Rouge,
a 10-A pupil in the River Rouge
High School, won first prize in
the speech contest a week ago
Tuesday at his school. It was
sponsored by the River Rouge
Exchange Club.
David is one of only 10 Jewish
boys among the 1500 pupils in
the River Rouge High School.
Winner of the local cup, David
will represent River Rouge in a
similar contest that will take in
representatives of the entire
downriver area. And lie may be
on his way to a place on the
contests to be held in the Ma-
sonic Temple in Detroit at which
the winner for metropolitan De-
troit will be chosen.
In discussing the freedom of
speech provision of the Constitu-
tion, Baker compared freedom of
speech and press with that in
many other foreign countries.
He showed that such freedom
makes for progressive and whole-
some government and warned
against any modifications that
might be attempted as a means
of fighting various "isms".
The contest winner has been
active in debating at Rouge High
where he has carried on his
work in public speaking and de-
bating under the direction of
Miss Tolhurst.
Jack Jacobson, runner-up in
the contest, was the other con-
testant from Rouge High. Both
were chosen to represent the
school in elimination contests re-
cently conducted.

Marking its growth and de-
velopment in the 13 years of its
existence, from a few small aux-
iliary chapters to its present
status of a national organization,
Women's American ORT com-
pleted plans for its annual con-
vention, to be held at the hotel
Astor, New York, May 6, 7 and
8. The theme of the convention
will be "A Trade Is the Refu-
gee's Passport" based on the ORT
program of assisting war victims
and refugees through retraining
and mechanical trades and agri-
culture.

ST. LOUIS. (WNS)—Because
of numerous complaints that its
