On another front, involving human rights for
Jews and the cause of Palestine's redemption,
Rabbi Goldman delivered one of his most bril-
liant addresses, at the convention of Hadassah,
and has had it published in a pamphlet under the
title "Justice Not Tolerance." The text of this
brochure is a challenge to all thinking men and
women to be fair in considering the issues affect-
ing Jews; it is especially challenging to Jews
themselves not to cringe and to be apologetic but
to be natural, to reject self-negation and to refuse
to yield to exaggerations. Asking the question
whether American Jewry will fetter its own
hands, be timid, merely extend charity and offer
no leadership, he declares:

against such an eventuality. We must sum-
mon the moral energies of our people to
make a renewed fight for our place under the
sun. Let us cease to speak sotto voce, apolo-
getically, with chattering teeth, as if we were
the malefactors and persecutors. The gravest
danger in our posiion is the complacency
with which we assume that our lot is inev-

whispering, begging. It is not ours to beg
for tolerance. We must demand justice.

MacMichael Promises to Support

—High Commissicner Sir Harold
MacMichael has promised his
personal support in the efforts
to alleviate the disastrous condi-
tions facing the citrus growers
of Palestine, it was officially an-
nounced here this week.
Continuing the recent close co-
operation that enabled them as
far back as last January to sub-
mit a joint petition calling upon
the Palestine Government to pro-
vide assistance to the citrus in-
dustry through loans, grants and
duty easements, Jewish and
Arab citrus growers again join-
ed in sending a delegation of six
Arabs and Jews to the High
Commissioner, who granted them
audience. The delegation sub-
mitted representations emphasiz-
ing the urgent need for immed-
iate disaster and ruin were to
be avoided. Sir Harold prom-
ised to convey these representa-
tions to the Government at Lon-
don, adding that he would ac-

story:
In the Hungarian Parliament, I am told, the
Secretary of the Ministry of Justice announced
that, in accordance with the provisions of the
new laws relating to the employment (or
should one say "sacking"?) of Jews, 28
Jewish judges and coroners were to be dis-
missed. An M. P. instantly interrupted the
Secretary and exclaimed: "That's not enough!"
"Sorry," replied the official of "Justice", "we
can't dismiss more than we have."

Nor can the clause prohibiting
the employment of Arab labor
be regarded as discrimination, he
declared, since the same clause
forbids the employment of Jew-
ish labor on such lands, which
are to be tilled only by the
present occupants, whether in-
dividuals or groups. In fact, he
pointed out, the whole purpose
of the clause is to prevent pri-
vate exploitation of or profit from
the land, and there is nothing in
its content that could legitimately
be interpreted as fostering dis-
crimination against the Arabs
or as encroaching on their rights.

Communal Duties

Dr. Goldman's evaluation of Zionist claims and
aspirations are especially touching and convincing,
and it is a pity that space does not permit
lengthier quotation at this point. Suffice it to state
that in the same spirit in which he decries the
bending of knees on the defense front he also
defies fear on the issue of Eretz Israel. He is
today one of Israel's greatest spokesmen. It is as
such that Detroit will greet him when he comes
here on April 16.

The High Commissioner has
appointed Moshe Landau, Jew-
ish lawyer, as a Magistrate in
Jerusalem. Mr. Landau, who is
28, was born in Danzig and edu-
cated at Kings College, London
University, where in 1933 he
obtained the degree of Bachelor
of Law.
The new Jewish Magistrate
passed the Foreign Advocates
Examination in Palestine in
1934. He was licensed to prac-
tice in Palestine in 1937, since
no one who is under 25 years
of age is allowed to practice law
in this country.
Coincidental with the intensi-
fication of the European War
on all fronts, general mobiliza-
tion of all Czechoslovakian citi-
zens of military age now resi-
dents in Palestine was ordered
by Dr. Joseph M. Kadlec, who
has been the Czechoslovakian

five years.
