(WNS) — The European continent is rapidly be- coming one of the greatest fam- ine areas in modern history, ac- cording to Morris C. Troper, Su- ropean director of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Com- mittee, who arrived here last week on the Rex. Mr. Troper, who was recently decorated by the French govern- ment for his work among refu- gees, came to America to report on present conditions among ref- ugees in Western Europe and the problems of war relief in Poland. Pointing out that minority groups are the first and greatest sufferers, Mr. Troper said that "large masses of the population especially in the occupied war areas in Eastern Europe are threatened with extinction on a scale heretofore unheard of and in a way which makes of the Black Hole of Calcutta a bless- ing." "Lack of food, clothing, shel- ter, medical supplies are daily creating unparalleled misery beg- garing description, and unless help is brought in a really size- able scale and quickly these un- fortunate people are doomed and may in addition in the course of their destruction scatter sickness and epidemic to all quarters of the continent without possibility of control," he said. "Lack of clothing and the re- strictions against Jews purchas- ing them will soon result in men and women walking the streets in indescribable shabbiness with- out stockings and without shoes, not to mention the countless thousands who in time, and that is not far off, will not be able to 1605 BARLUM TOWER GOLDEN BUD ALE No other GENUINE TOP.
