BUCHAREST. (WNS) — Ru-
manian Jews watched with appre-
hension the moves made by Pre-
mier Georg Tatarescu to include
members of the violently anti-
Semitic and pro-Nazi Iron Guard
in the Party of National Re-
birth, Rumania's sole political
party, recalling previous anti-
Jewish terrorist campaigns con-
ducted by the Iron Guard.
Earlier, Rumanian authorities
disclolsed the release of all but
14 of the 800 Iron Guardists who
were imprisoned following the as-
sassination last year of Premier
Armand Calinescu. The Guardists
were released after signing a
pledge of allegiance to King
Carol.
Though government spokesmen
denied that Premier Tatarescu
was considering the appointment
of an Iron Guardist to the Cabi-
net, it was learned that Michael
Maneilescu, former Iron Guard
sympathizer, was one of several
possibilities for the Cabinet post.
Jews here feel that the release
of the Iron Guardists will result
in a new wave of anti-Semitic
terrorism. Many leaders of the
Iron Guard who fled to Germany
after the organization was sup-
pressed are expected to return
to Rumania to carry out Nazi
orders.

A goal of $925,000 has been recommended by the Detroit Service Group Budget
Committee for the 1940 Allied Jewish Campaign, it was announced by Abraham
Srere, president of the Jewish Welfare Federation, which conducts the annual spring
drive for local, national and overseas causes. Mr. Srere served as chairman of the
steering committee which reviewed the recommendations of the several budget com-
mittee divisions, each of which had weighed the petitions of various categories of the

"After careful consideration,"
said Mr. Srere, "and weeks of
work, the budget committee sub-
mits this figure as the minimum
sum required to meet the needs
of the 55 beneficiary agencies to
in be included in our drive." The
budget committee was composed
of a cross-section of Detroit Jew-
ry and was headed by Mrs. Joseph
H. Ehrlich.
