The A. Z. A. annual city-wide
oratory contest will be held be-
fore the open meeting of the
Bnai Brith Louis Marshall on
Tuesday evening, March 19, at
the Butzel Memorial auditorium
in the Jewish Community Center,
Woodward and Holbrook.
According to Max Chomsky,
A. Z. , A. cultural director who
is in charge of the oratory con-
test, the subject which members
will orate is "Judaism and Amer-
ican Democracy." The Louis
Marshall Lodge will award to the
winning orator a trophy, while
Sam W. Leib, past president of
Pisgah Lodge, will present a
"Sam W. Leib Oratory Medal".
The oratory contest is open to
the members of the 11 local
A. Z. A. chapters.
The A. Z. A. office is assisting
the Bnai Brith Hillel Foundation
at Ann Arbor in the sale of tick-
ets for the major Hillel produc-
tion of the year, "The Gentle
People," by Irwin Shaw. The play
will be given at the Lydia Men-
delsohn Theater in Ann Arbor on
March 22 and 23. Reservations

The Detroit and Windsor
Council's semi-monthly meeting
will be held on Sunday afternoon,

by helping them with their fund

A meeting of the officers and
executive board of the Mo'os
Chitim committee was held on.
March 6, at the Shaarey Zedek,
for the purpose of formulating
plans for solicitation of funds and
organizing sub-committees to ad-
minister the work of the com-
mittee. Charles A. Smith pre-
sided.
An auditor's statement of re-
ceipts and disbursements as of
Dec. 31, 1939, was presented. It
was found that a total of $6,
893.72 was raised in 1939 from
82 organizations, from individ-
uals, from the Jewish Welfare
Federation and the Jewish So-
cial Service Bureau. Total dis-
bursements were $6,723.63, di-
vided as follows: Cash payments
to 1,379 families of $4,376 and
25,000 pounds of matzoh prod-
ucts to these families, amounting
to $2,247.75; postage, printing

will be the speakers at the joint
meeting of the Wayne County
Medical Society and the Detroit
Bar Association, on Monday,
March 18, at the Art Institute.
Dr. Fishbein will speak on
"Medical and Hospital Insurance
—Its Value to the Public." The
subject of Judge Jayne's and
Mr. Platt's addresses will be
"Legal Service for Persons of
Moderate Means," Judge Payne
speaking on "Possible Effects on
the Public and the Legal Pro-
fession," and Mr. Platt on "Dis-
cussion of Current Proposals."
The addresses will deal with hn-
portant proposals made to the
medical and legal professions in
recent years.

Music Study Club
Program March 19

The Music Study Club will hold
its study program Tuesday,
March 19, at the Jewish Com-
munity Center. Valte• Poole will
lecture on the subject, "Beet-
hoven and His Nine Sym-
phonies."

Shubiner, accompanied by Betty
Goldstrom. The student chorus
will sing under the direction of
Gershon Konikow.

At Colonial Hotel

The Colonial Hotel and Min-
eral Baths in Mount Clemens,
Mich., will re-open April 1, for
its 6th season.
Completion of elaborate pre-
parations for celebrating the 6th
annual Passover holidays in the
famed resort have just been an-
nounced by Max Elkin and Al-
bert Grossman, who have re-
turned from Miami Beach where
they operate the Poinciana Hotel.
Erev Pesach is April 22.
Rabbi Lavy Becker, who has
conducted services at the Colon-
ial for many years, will again
officiate at the Sedorim and will
remain throughout the eight days.
Varied entertainment will en-
liven the holiday week and, of
course, the world famous baths
located within the hotel will be
enjoyed by many.
