200 Executed in Warsaw
It was learned also that Nazi
authorities executed 100 Jews and
100 Poles in Warsaw to avenge
the murder of a Gestapo agent in
a Polish workers' quarter. Ges-
tapo agents invaded the scene of
the murder and beat everyone in
the street at the time, women and
children included. Private homes
and shops were demolished.
The 200 men executed were
rounded up by the Nazis and
executed without a trial of any
sort. The population was warned
that the murder of any Nazi offi-
cial in the future would be fol-
lowed by the execution of at least
100 Jews and 100 non-Jews.
The suicides of two prominent
Warsaw Jews were reported here.
Dr. Meisner, the famous neurolo-
gist, and Wertheim, local indus-
trialist, are the latest to have
taken their lives as the result
of the systematic Nazi brutality.

Slovaks," according to Slovak
newspapers arriving here.
Jews have been ordered to re-
port twice a week for street
cleaning duties, the papers dis-
closed. Slovak circles here attri-
bute this measure to the Hlinka
Guards, who are reported to be
pressing for harsher anti-Semitic
action to make way for their in-
creased participation in Slovak
commerce and industry.
It was reported also that in
Bratislava Parliamentary circles
there has been a tendency to delay
the complete elimination of Jews
from Slovakia's economic life in
order to impede German infiltra-
tion.

British Explorer Reports Hitler New Center for Zebulun Society
Preparing to "Colonize"
HERZLIA. (Palcor Agency)—
America
VANCOUVER, B. C. (WNS)—
Rosita Forbes, British explorer
and writer, told newspapermen
here that Adolf Hitler last July
informed her that he had "Amer-
ica to colonize."
Miss Forbes quoted the Nazi
Fuehrer as saying: "You can
have your Africa and your camels
that you like so much. I don't
want Africa. I'll have America
to colonize."
Rumania Forbids Passage of
Jewish Refugees Headed
for Palestine
BUCHAREST (WNS) — Ac-
ceding to British pressure, the
Rumanian Government has for-
bidden the passage of Jewish
refugees headed for Palestine
through its territory, it was an-
nounced here.
The unexplained order by the
Interior Ministry two weeks ago
closing the offices of all Zionist
organizations was attributed to
the fact that the government held
the Zionist organization chiefly
responsible for encouraging Jew-
ish refugees to enter Palestine
illegally,
Mihail Ghelmegeanu, minister of
the interior, was reported to have
told Wilhelm Silverman, presi-
dent of the Zionist Organization
in Rumania, that the government
would permit the reopening of
• Zionist headquarters on the con-
dition that the organization re-
frain from aiding Jews without
certificates to reach Palestine.
Dr. Wilhelm Filderman, speak-

ish Communities, assailed the ex-

elusion of the Jews from the Front
of National Rebirth, sole Ruman-
ian party, despite the fact that
other minority groups were in-
vited to membership in the Front.
Dr. Filderman criticized also the
Citizenship Revision Law which
has disenfranchised more than
225,000 Jews, including war vet-
erans, war widows and orphans.
He stressed the tragic plight of
Jews, who were thrown out of
their jobs after being deprived of
their citizenship.
Plan of 5 Gold Shirts to Over-
throw Mexican Government
Termed "Absurd"
MEXICO CITY (WNS) — The
five leaders of the violently anti-
Semitic Gold Shirt Legion who
were arrested here on suspecion
of plotting an armed revolution
were released on instructions from
President Lazaro Cardenas who
ruled that "no one shall be pros-
ecuted for subversive activities
unless they result in danger to
the national peace."
The Government and the press
were inclined to take the planned
revolution lightly, most afternoon
papers referring to it as a
"comic opera revolution."
COUGHLIN
(Continued from Page 1)
returned to his desk in the na-
tion's capital after a two-month
illness, and other members of
the House Committee Investi-
gating un-American Activities, in-
dicated reluctance to accept Fa-
ther Coughlin's offer to testify
before the committee.
While announcing that the ra-
dio priest had asked for an op-
portunity to testify before the
committee, Rep. Dies said that
he would recommend to the com-
mittee that "we go to the West
Coast and expose Hollywood
thoroughly, investigate consumer
organizations further and in-
vestigate Communists in the gov-
ernment."
The committee chairman said
that Father Coughlin's request
would have to be considered by
the entire committee because the
committee wished to avoid giv-
ing "merchants of hate" an op-
portunity to "spread racial and
religious hatred that they would
not otherwise have."
Mr. Dies said the Detroit
priest's appearance before the
committee involved a definition
of un-Americanism—whether the
committee should investigate only
those "organizations with a for-
eign tie-up" or include persons
who "preach racial, religious or
class hatred."
The Congressman took the
same stand with regard to the
Ku Klux Klan, declaring that he
did not know whether the pres-
ent-day Klan was within the
scope of the committee. He in-
sisted that he personally consid-
ered the preaching of class hatred
to be un-American but he would
not speak for the rest of the
committee.
Neutral observers expressed
surprise that Rep. Dies was turn-
ing his attention away from sup-
porters of William Dudley Pel-
ley, Coughlin and, other anti-
Semites and demanding an in-
vestigation of Hollywood in
which there would be "no pussy-
footing, nor backtracking, no
crawling."

rerplies to an official question-
naire of 16,903 policemen now

answer the questionnaire and
1,405 members of the department
are on vacation or sick leive.
Mayor LaGuardia pointed out
that the majority of the police-
men who had joined the Chris-
tian Front did so in the belief
that it sought to further religion
and combat atheism. He assumed
full responsibility for the inquiry
into the police department's affil-
iation with the Front.
Recalling the recent Federal
arrests of 17 Christian Fronters
who were indicted by the Brook-
lyn Grand Jury, charged with
attempting to overthrow the
United States Government, the
Mayor said that some "master
mind or minds, not yet disclosed"
were encouraging these young
men to perform criminal acts."
President Requested to Inter-
cede with Nazi Government
for Polish Relief
WASHINGTON. (WNS)—Sen-
ator Arthur H. Vandenberg of
Michigan, one of the leaders of
the isolationist bloc in Congress,
has requested President Roose-
velt to instruct Undersecretary
of State Sumner Welles, who
sailed for a fact-finding tour of
Europe last week, to seek the
permission of the Nazi govern-
ment to permit American repre-
sentatives to supervise the ex-
penditures of relief funds raised
in this country for the aid of
Nazi-occupied Poland.
Senator Vanderberg, who has
frequently expressed indignation
at the persecution of Jews but
steadfastly opposes any relaxa-
tion of United States immigra-
tion laws in favor of refugees,
told the President that he had
received preliminary assurances
from the German Embassy here
that such an arrangement might
be effected.
In a letter to the President, the
Senator stated that the collec-
tion of funds by the Polish
American Relief Committee
"cannot hope to get fully into
stride until there is complete as-
surance that these Polish relief
contributions reach their intend-
ed destination and are adequately
disbursed in keeping with our
American expectations."
Numerous complaints have
been received here that Nazi au-
thorities in Poland are diverting
American-raised relief funds to
their own use and are discrimin-
ating in the distribution of re-
lief between Pole and Jew. Simi-
lar complaints prompted the
American Red Cross to send its
own representative, James T.
Nicholson, to Poland to super-
vise distribution of Red Cross
supplies. Nazi authorities permit-
ted Nicholson to enter Cracow on
an "inspection" visit only.

Registers a "Complaint"
to The Chronicle
Editor, Detroit Jewish Chronicle:
Having by this time rek.eived
so many compliments and con-
gratulations on the spa ling,
new, short, white dress with
which you have clothed The
Chronicle, I believe that
can
now stand a few words
the
other side.
As you no doubt know. my
profession is to examine eyes
and fit them with glasses. Th e
old style of The Chronicle with
its blurred type and drab-I. .ki ng
paper used to be rather dilicult
for some people to read. They
would therefore come to my of-
fice to have their eyes xani-
ined and fitted with the 1 , oper
glasses. But since you br tight
out the new style of The
icle with its snow-white paper
and so conspicuous black print,
it is no effort for people to read
it even though their eyes are not
so good; and the result of it is
that I am losing a lot of busi-
ness.
Don't you think I have reason
to register a complaint? Of
course, I don't intend to sue The
Chronicle for a loss of business,
but I want you to know my po-
sition in this matter. However,
since my complaint will not
change the style of the new
Chronicle, I humbly bow to the
opinion of all your readers by
adding my congratulations and
best wishes to that great forward
step that The Chronicle has as-
sumed.
Sincerely yours,
H. E. LIPPITT.
