For True Brotherhood

The coming week will be observed as
annual Brotherhood Week.
This is an occasion for re-evaluation of
our thoughts, our deeds, our aspirations,
as Americans and as Jews.
Christians and Jews will observe it
this week. All faiths should observe it
if it is not to be a one-sided wishful-
thinking process.
This is a time of reckoning, of review-
ing in our minds and hearts the need for
mutual understanding and for kindly re-
lations among men.
This is a time for determination that
Mr. Smith will meet Mr. Cohen, and will
learn to know him, and that by the same
token Mr. Levy will meet Mr. Jones and
will likewise seek to understand him.
True brotherhood is not one-sided. It
requires common understanding among
all peoples. It is to this end that we
must strive during annual observance of
Brotherhood Week.

His Tongue—An Unruly Evil

Father Charles E. Coughlin should turn
to the book of St. James and read the
eighth verse of the third chaptet: "The
tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly
evil, full of deadly poison." Perhaps it
will cause him to examine his own speech-
craft and to give him an inkling of his
own destructiveness.
This man has done a lot of speaking
from his tower in Royal Oak, and he has
wrought evil in a comparatively peaceful
American community. But his power of
speech does not possess as much magic as
he imagines.
Somewhere in the writings of Lord
Lytton there appears the statement: "The
magic of the tongue is the most danger-
ous of all spells." This was true of the
Coughlin Tongue in 1938. We doubt
whether his magic retains its witchcraft
today. Two weeks ago he silenced his own
voice and rested for a week, promising
sensational things for the folowing week.
Then the tongue that rested for a week
resumed its function. But there was no
sensation. It was merely another publicity
stunt which proved the wisdom of the
author of the proverb : "The ear tires
sooner than the tongue."
A few more stunts like the one of two
weeks ago, and the ears of the wise Amer-
ican people will know how to use the dial
on their radios the moment they hear the
tongue of Coughlin which is "full of
deadly poison."

A Step in Right Direction

A step in the right direction has been
taken by the League for Human Rights,
Freedom and Democracy, an offshoot of
American Federation of Labor organiza-
tions, in its decision to call upon all affili-
ated unions to give moral and financial
support to the underground labor move-
ment in Germany.
One of the means of putting an end to
Hitlerism will have to be the strengthen-
ing of the liberal and decent forces who
continue to battle underground. Had suffi-
cient help been given these forces during
the past seven years, it is possible that
Nazism might not have risen to its present
power. But it is never too late to mend.
The labor forces in the world must unite
against the tyranny, and this latest A.F.L.
effort is a step in this direction.

The New Community Building

There is justification for genuine satis-
faction over the bringing into reality of
the plan for the construction of the new
community building to serve as a Hebrew
school and as a center for recreational
activities.
For years officers and active leaders of
the United Hebrew Schools have been
demanding the erection of a building in
the Linwood-Davison section. It was esti-
mated about four years ago as a result
of a survey, that more than 700 of the
large number of children who are today
without a Jewish education in that neigh-
borhood were prepared to enroll as stu-
dent in a Hebrew school, provided facili-
ties were created for them. The new build-
ing creates these facilities and fills a
necessary community need.
Incidentally, the building will also serve
as a neighborhood center to house Jewish
Community Center activities in that neigh-
borhood after regular Hebrew school
hours.
It is to be hoped that this occasion of
educational expansion will be marked by
a strengthening of the hands of those in
charge of directing the work of our
schools so that ever larger numbers of
our children may be provided with a Jew-
ish education in the traditional manner.

The Pelley Mystery

'Those who have followed the Pelley
serial in the press will sit in wonderment
and amazement over the latest turn of
affairs.
William Dudley Pelley, arch-anti-
Semite, destructive genius who sought
the destruction of our present form of
government in favor of the Hitler-brand
of fascism, was sought by the police but
could not be found. Of a sudden, when the
Dies committee needed a defendant
against the charges of Congressman
Frank Hook of Michigan, this American
Hitler suddenly turned up, cleared Con-
gressman Dies and then began his cam-
paign of vituperation against the Jews
and the present government before this
committee which has already made a
mess of many of its hearings.
Advocating "disenfranchising 10,000,-
000 American Jews" (note the typically
lying Hitlerite manner), and asserting
that "the time has come for an American
Hitler to arise", Pelley places the Dies
committee in an embarrassing position.
How did the committee happen to locate
him for whitewashing purposes? What
will it do with this destructive force in
America who has been distributing vast
amounts of literature maligning the Jews,
President Roosevelt and other eminent
Americans? Will it discredit him once
and for all and help put a stop to his
horrible work?
This is not merely a Pelley mystery;
it is also a Dies committee mystery. But
the latter is challenged once and for all
to do its duty fairly and justly and not
to give courage to a menace in American
life.

Hopeful Note on Palestitne

After conferring with President Roose-
velt, Dr. Chaim Weizmann, president of
the World Zionist Organization, stated
that the former was confident of a solu-
tion of the Palestine problem upon the
termination of the war. This conference
was significant because three most im-
portant spokesmen were present: The
President of the United States, the head
of the Zionist movement and Lord Loth-
ian, British Ambassador. Through com-
mon understanding on the part of the
major powers concerned, and by estab-
lishing peaceful relations with the Arabs,
there is no reason why Palestine should
not become the center of Jewish life in
the world and the inspiration for good
to all faiths.

• You Should Know

Don't be surprised if that so-
called war they're having in Eu-
rep:: develops a sudden shift in
alignments as the Allies come
to take Gory Goering's peace pro-
posals more seriously . . . Wal-
ter Winchell, who tells us to look
out for Pauline Kohler's book "I
Was Hitler's Maid," has a new
name for Badolf—The Little Man
Who Isn't All There . . • Why,
with all that emphasis on unity
in the Reich, asks a London
punster, did Hitler ever permit
Unity Mitford to return to Eng-
land? . . A Columbus youth
named John Gunther, evidently
as observant as his famous name-
sake, has returned home from a
nine-month stay in Germany,
where he was an "exchange
scholarship student," thoroughly
disgusted at the Nazis' efforts to
make him and other young Amer-
icans over into brown-shirted
swastika-bearers . . . Best wise-
crack of the week is credited to
a journalist who was attending
a party at the home of an Amer-
ican correspondent for Nazi news-
papers . . . It seems a sofa
caught fire, and somebody cried:
"What to do?" . . . "If you
want to do it the American way,"
said the bright boy, "just throw
some water on it . . . But if
you're doing things the Nazi way,
throw some books into the fire."

Emma Redell, the greater'
American-born Wagnerian singe:
(she was a Jewish girl), who
recently died of a heart attack.,
really died of a broken heart . ,
Over 10 years ago she was pron..
ised a contract with the Metro.
politan Opera, where she IR
longed, but due to petty politiv
she never sang on the stage 0f
that institution.
Tully Filmus, New York Je‘,
ish artist, has just completed
portrait study of Mrs. .Eleano,
Roosevelt.
Max Band, the famous Jewish
painter now in this country, wa,
offered a thousand smackers for
a photograph in his collection .. .
The photo is a picture of Presi-
dent Roosevelt with a most un-
usual intimate autograph . ,
Band has brought with him a
masterpiece called "November 8,
1938," a canvas showing the Nazi
pogroms against the synagogues.
Ossip Dymow is gradually at-
taining recognition as the most
resourceful scenario writer of
Jewish movies, and will become
a top figure in the proposed
combine of all Jewish movie in-
terests.
The early spring will see the
dramatic debut of Second Ave-
nue's own Molly Picon on the
Broadway stage in an English
production . . "Morning Star,"
by Sylvia Regan, is the vehicle
that will be hitched to Molly.

• Jewish News

Vladimir Jabotinsky, the Revi-
sionist leader, who will land in
the U. S. via Clipper one of these
days, has challenged Dr. Chaim
Weizmann, now in this country,
to a public debate on Zionist pol-
icy in time of war.
The Zionist eulogies on Senator
Borah all forgot to mention that
the last time he was asked to
speak out against the White Pa-
per, the Senator refused . . . His
reasons undeniably proved that
in his last years he disapproved
of Zionism.
The new U. S. Minister to
Arabia, Bert Fish, has a thorough
understanding of Zionism and
may prove a most important fac-
tor, from the Jewish point of
view, in the event of the exten-
tion of the war to a Near Eastern
battle-front.
Alaska, which had only 600
Jews at the last census, may find
itself blessed with a sizable Jew-
ish community if certain proposed
legislation is passed by Congress
this year.
That anti - Jewish Canadian
broadcast over Station CKAC,
which linked Jews and Commu-
nists, was called to the attention
of Canadian Jewish leaders by
Moe Brainin . . . The apology
tendered by the station is hardly
satisfactory, however, in view of
the fact that the writer of the
offending script also holds the
position of official radio censor
. . It does seem to us that the
dismissal of that gentleman from
his post is called for.

• About People

Jacob Fishman, brilliant col-
umnist of the Jewish Morning
Journal, is a member of the board
of experts on Jewish "Informa-
tion Please" radio program spon-
sored by Rokeach's.
When Adolphe Menjou was a
student at Cornell University he
learned his mathematics from the
late Louis Wolheim, who was a
college instructor for some years
before he became a film star.
Denials notwithstanding, Greta
Garbo's wedding date with Dr.
Benjamin G. Hauser is getting
closer . . . And don't be surprised
if Greta Hauser quits the movies
for good.
Those of you who've been fas-
cinated by Zelda Popkin's new
thriller, "Time Off for Murder,"
will be interested to know that
she's the wife of publicist Louis
Popkin.
Friedrich Schorr, the opera
singes' whose father was a famous
cantor, is quite an athlete, and
spends much of his spare time
on gymnastics of one sort or an-
other. Down at the Artef Yid-
dish Theater they're expecting
leading lady Helen Beverly to
middle-aisle it very shortly with
the Group Theater's Lee Cobb.
Among the speakers at the
Heywood Broun memorial meet-
ing to be held on Lincoln's birth-
day will be Charlie Horowitz,
whose distinction it is that the
late columnist liked to use the
taxicab he drove — and still
drives, for that matter.
