DR. NAHUM GOLDMAN URGES JEWS
BE PREPARE TO MEET EMERGENCY
AT FORTHCOMING PEACE SESSIONS

Addressing 200 Jewish leaders
from all parts of the United
States at a dinner arranged by
the American Jewish Congress,
Dr. Nahum Goldmann, chairman
of the administrative committee
of the World Jewish Congress,
who arrived two weeks ago from
Geneva, Switzerland, to report on
the position of Jews in Europe
under the rule of Nazism, de-
clared that while relief is im-
portant it is not decisive. He
urged that Jews be prepared
with formulae and programs for
defense of the Jewish position at
the peace conference and empha-
sized that American Jewry has
a major responsibility in the
preparation for such defense
work.
Expressing confidence that with
the arrival of peace there will
be a new ray of hope for suf-
fering European Jewry, Dr. Gold-
mann declared: "European Jewry
can only continue to exist if it
has the hope of this new future
and the belief in its coming. I
am convinced that this future
will come—a great chance for
world Jewry will come because
never before has the world re-
alized the importance of the Jew-

ish problem and the necessity of
solving it. It has become one of
the major issues of the world.
But it will depend on us whether
we will be able to use this
chance which may be lost if we
are not. prepared for the great
hour ahead. Whatever European
Jewry will do in preparing itself
will not be sufficient unless Amer-
ican Jewry will fully cooperate
and be ready to take its share in
the preparations for and the re-
alization of this better future."
Philip Slomovitz, president of
the Detroit Chapter of the Amer-
ican Jewish Congress, greeted the
guest in behalf of the Detroiters,
and Sigmund David was toast-
master. Louis Lipsky of New
York, national Zionist leader, and
Henry Monsky, president of Bnai
Brith, and Charles Cowen, na-
tional Zionist leader, were among
those on the dais.

ing," at Philadelphia-Byron Hall
Tuesday evening, you see the
blessings of redemption and rec-
lamation which the Jewish Na-
tional Fund is bringing to the
soil of Eretz Israel.

and that it is necessary to stop
somewhere and to create a home
for the homeless in order to re-
store their position as human be-
ings. He declared that once we
have a home, not merely a refuge,
where Jews will be a majority, the
position of the Jew as refugee will
be altered. He pleaded for a place
where it will no longer be neces-
sary for Jews to adapt them-
selves constantly to strange con-
ditions, and declared that a strong
Palestine will not only make it
possible for Jews to live in peace
with the Arabs but will also en-
able them to expand and to settle
in neighboring Arab lands.
Dr. Weizmann pleaded for an
opportunity for Jews to lead a
dignified life, to be permitted to
exist as human beings, to have
homes, to have schools, for their
children to have the right to
work and to walk freely. He said
that a certain amount of stamina
is derived from the friendship of
free lands like the United States
and especially expressed gratitude
for the voice of this country which
stands for those moral values that
are today being trampled upon
in Europe."
