CLIFTON AMU& - CINCINNATI 20, OHIO DETROIT JEWISH CHRONICLE By PHILIP SLOMOVITZ The Leslie Hore-Belisha Issue during his recent visit in Europe. General Johnson Issues s urrounding the resignation of Leslie has debunked the fear of propaganda and pointed out that "consciously or not, the suppression of Hore-Belisha as British Minister of War may remain a mystery for many years to come, and truth itself is a kind of propaganda and certainly we may never know whether the Cabinet shake-up we don't want any policy of silence—silence in came O .: a result of opposition to the young favor of this kind of brutality." Together with The Nation's 1939 Honor Roll "The Nation's Honor Roll for the past year is another brilliant selection of outstanding names of men and women who deserve recognition for their battle for human decencies. The name of Eleanor (Mrs. F. D,) Roosevelt stands out not only because it is first on the list but also be- cause the editors of the Nation will be universally applauded for the recognition they give to her courage and intelligence. The Friends Service Committee (Quakers) is rightfully chosen for honors for its magnificent work in behalf of refugees. Senator Wagner and Congresswoman Rogers are deservedly lauded for their refugee children's bill. Maury Maverick, Mayor of San Antonio, is lauded for upholding civil rights Others are similarly honored for great humani- tarian efforts. There are others who could be added to the Nation's list. But on the whole its selections are commendable. • Simon Shetzer and the J.N.F. In this spirit I repeat the ancient vow of my fathers: If I forget thee, Oh Jerusalem, may my right hand forget its cunning, may my tongue cleave to the roof of its mouth if I re- member thee not." What we need today, in the Diaspora, more than anything else, is courage. Palestine provides it. There they do not think of and speak in terms of anti-Semitism and destruction. There they are con- cerned with building and creating. We can gather courage from that healthy Jewish community--by helping them build, by planting trees, by redeem- ing Zion. With it will come a redeemed Jewish sense of pride and courage, The Midrash has interesting references to the Jews and Palestine. Both are interlinked. Both are inseparable. We are told in Midrashic tradition: God said to Moses: "Palestin e is dear to me, and so is Israel. I will take the people that is dear to me to the land that is dear to me!" There are comely men in ugly garb, and ugly men in beautiful raiment. But Israel is fit for Palestine and Palestine is fit for Israel. The atmosphere of Palestine maketh wise. There is proof in our time of the reality of these maxims. Palestine and Israel live again as insep- arable entities. • Barbarities: Of Man and Beast Back in 1902, the great Polish novelist, Henryk Sienkiwicz, author of "Quo Vadis," wrote a fable under the title "The Eagle and the Falcon." Be- cause of its prophetic nature, it deserves to be re- printed at this time and we share it with our readers: The eagle perched near the nest of the falcon and said to him: "In the name of my rights, liste n to me!" "What do you want?" asked the falcon. "I want to kill you and eat your body?" "Why do you wish to destroy me?" "How stupid you are! And lacking in infor- mation, too, I see. My nest is too small, so I want yours; thus my sons will have room to grow. And besides, I have my eagle politics, you speak a different language, and you are not in accord with my ideas." "I speak the language that God gave me. And can you tell me why I should be in accord with your ideas?" "I don't know, but I know I have the right to kill and eat everyone who is not in accord with my ideas, one of which is to kill you and eat you." "Then there i s no way I can escape my fate?" "I'm afraid not. But if you were to sacrifice yourself, it would be a great honor for you." "Tell me, my friend, where did you learn to think along those lines? Who taught you?" "Why, you ignoramus," replied the eagle, "don't you know I studied for two years in the Zoological Gardens of Berlin?" But in the environs of the Berlin Zoological Gardens have been enacted episodes of barbarism that are not limited to beasts of prey. Men have turned into cruel beings. Barbarities displace the humanities. Mankind is challenged to abandon the appeal to cruelty and to return to the status of decency. 5 COUGHLINITES Continued from Page 1 lotted might have come from Na- tional Guard stores. Followers of Coughlin The Rev. Charles E. Cough- lin was placed in an embarros- , sing position upon the disclosure of the arrests, since leaders of the Christian Front have consist- ently referred to him as "our leader." John F. Cassidy, described by Hoover as one of the two prin- cipals in the group arrested, was an ardent follower of Father Coughlin even before the radio priest became a national figure. He was an organizer of the So- cial Justice League, composed of neighborhood groups of Coughlin- ites, and in organizing the Chris- tian Front here declared it was dedicated to the principles of "So- cial Justice" laid down by Father Coughlin. Planned to Eradicate Jews Hoover revealed that their pro- gram for revolution included first, the recruiting of a larger force and arming it with guns and am- munition stolen from the Na- tional Guard. Then they were to begin terrorizing the Jews and proceed to more ambitious and violent acts such as bombings of the Jewish Daily Forward, the Daily Worker, the Brooklyn head- quarters of the American League for Peace and Democracy and the Cameo Theater here which shows Russian films. Finally, Hoover said, the plot- ters seriously discussed plans for widespread bombings of bridges,. tunnels, and other public works, the seizure of all public utilities, capture of the United States Cus- tom House, the General Post Of- fice and the Federal Reserve Bank with its gold supply. "Plans were discussed," Hoover said, "for the wholesale sabotage and blowing up of all these in- stitutions so that a dictatorship could he set up here, similar to the Hitler dictatorship in Ger- many." Hoover did not discuss the feas- ibility of these grandiose plans, but Mayor LaGuardia said: "I don't think the United States Government is in much danger from 17 guys like these." The Federal officials in charge of the case did not indicate that they seriously believed the men could overthrow the government, but United States Attorncy Har- old M. Kennedy of Brooklyn, who will prosecute them, said that the arrests had to be made at once because some of the plotters might have decided at any minute to start the revolution by planting a bomb in some building. The 18 men, Kennedy said, are to be ar- raigned before Federal Judge Gro- ver Moscowitz in Brooklyn. The names of the 17 men pro- vided by Mr. Hoover follow: John F. Cassidy, William Gerald Bishop, John T. Trout, Jr., Macklin Hoe- tiger, Michael Joseph Bierne, An- drew Buckley, William Henry Bushnell, Jr., Claus Gunther Ernecke, John Franklin C o o k, John A. Graf, Leroy Keegan, George Kelly, Frank Michael Ma- lone, Alfred J. Quinlan, John Al- bert Viebroek, DIichacl Vill 1111(1 Edward Walsh. Coughlin Denies Affiliation with "Specific" Christian Front Involved Following the arrest of the 17 Christian Front members on a charge of plotting to overthrow the U. S. Government, the Rev. Charles E. Coughlin declared that he had "roundly disavowed" the Christian Front. Father Coughlin, who said he has advocated "A Christian Front" to combat Nazism and Communism, but never has sup- ported the "specific" Christian Front involved in the conspiracy charges, expressed the hope that J. Edgar Hoover would "sub- stantiate every contention made." Now that Manhattan is honey- combed with underground railway tubes, subway king Sans RosofT is looking for new fields to con- quer, and is said to be casting an interested eye at the newspaper business. „„,,„,.,..0 N r • tt q _ 11 II l• I' 11, THE VERY HEART OF MIAMI BEACH Few stops from the ocean, theatres, fine shops and eating places.
