Ticktin Memorial
Drive Inaugurated
By Hashomer Hatzair

As part of its extensive work
within the Jewish National Fund,
the Detroit Ken of Hashomer
Hatzair, the world Zionist scout
movement, will inaugurate on
Chamisho Osar Shvat, Jewish Ar-
bor day, a fund-raising campaign
for a grove of trees as a me-
morial to the late Ephraim Tick-
tin. Gan Ticktin, as the garden
will be called, is to be planted
at Ein Hashofet, at Hashomer
Ribbutz in Palestine, upon one
of whose fields Ticktin, a for-
mer Detroiter, fell a victim to
an Arab ambush during the
spring of 1938.
Ephraim Ticktin, long active
in Zionist life in Detroit, left
for Palestine in 1933 to realize
his objectives within the Chalutz
movement which has done so
much for the Jewish Renaissance
in Eretz. Integrating himself
within the Ribbutz life at Ein
Hashofet, the first American col-
ony, Ticktin won note as an agri-
culturist. Returning across the
reclaimed fields, on the very day
that he had received commenda-
tions from the agricultural sec-
tion of the Histadrut, Ticktin and
Eliezer Krongold were fatally
wounded by bullets of an Arab
ambush party.
The planting of trees, as a
means of reclaiming Palestinian
soil, has been an activity ener-
getically furthered in Hashomer
Hatzair. The observance of
Chamsho Osar Shvat, on Jan. 25,
marks an appropriate period in
which the expression of the blood
bond between the Detroit Ken
and the Jewish homeland in Eretz
Yisroel, for which Ephraim Tick-
tin died, may be manifested in
this worthy cause.
The drive for Gan Ticktin has
received the authorization and
cooperation of the Detroit chap-
ter of the Jewish National Fund
council. The campaign will be
formally started at an Oneg

Dr. Goldstein Lauds
Auxiliary of J. N. F.

In a statement addressed to
the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Jew-
ish National Fund, whose an-
nual donor luncheon will be held
on March 20, Dr. Israel Gold-
stein, national president of the
fund, lauds the Detroit group's
work and urges them success in
their 1940 effort. Dr. Goldstein'3
statement follows:
"Recalling the magnificent suc-
cess of your luncheon a year ago,
when it was my extreme pleas-
ure to be with you, I am happy
to know that you are making
preparations at this time for a
similar effort this year.
"The Ladies' Auxiliary of the
Jewish National Fund in Detroit
is one of the finest assets we have
in the United States for the
benefit of Geulath Haaretz. Your
organization and its leadership
possess that rare combination of
intelligence and zeal which is
the key to Zionist achievement
in all kinds of weather.
"The Zionist cause was never
more compelling than it is today
in the light of the unprecedented
catastrophe which has fallen up-
on our people in European lands.
The J. N. F. program was never
more urgent. Land in Palestine
today is not only the indispen-
sable basis for the settlement of
the tens of thousands who con-
tinue to stream into the coun-
try, but it is also an act of far-
sighted statesmanship looking to
the eventual recognition of our
just claims in Eretz Israel.
"You have my cordial greet-
ing and warm good wishes for
the success of your 1940 Don-
or Luncheon."

Shabbat at 8:30 p. m., Friday

day will be features of the oc-
casion. All friends of the move-
ment are invited.
