SET FEB. 18-25
AS AMITY WEEK

"Crisis in Human Re-
lations" Is Keynote
of Good Will

NEW YORK (Religious News
Service) — The seventh annual
nation-wide observance of Brother-
hood Week will be held during the
week of Feb. 18-25, 1940, it was
announced here by Dr. Everett
IL Clinchy, director of the Na-
tional Conference of Christians
and Jews, under whose auspices
the observance will be held, The
1940 observance will have as its
general theme "The Present
Crisis in Human Relations."
In announcing the date of Bro-
therhood Week, Dr. Clinchy said:
"In this period of crisis broth-
erhood among Americans becomes
a national necessity. There is an
urgent need of maintaining here
our national unity and counter-
acting the many divisive influences
actively at work among us.
"Democracy is founded on reli-
gious ideals—on the conception of
the Fatherhood of God and the
Brotherhood of Man, every man
and woman needing and helping
the other as in the normal family.

Stress Basic Human Worth

"Brotherhood Week stresses the
basic worth of human personality
emphasized by Catholics, Protes-
tants and Jews. Churches and
synagogues can translate this
ideal into terms of neighborli-
ness in community life, justice in
social and economic relations and
goodwill in personal attitudes."
Dr. Clinchy said that chambers
of commerce, service clubs, labor
unions, agricultural organizations
and youth agencies will hold Bro-
therhood Week meetings from
coast to coast. In addition, he said,
churches, schools, women's clubs
and veterans posts will mark the
observance,
Dr. Arthur H. Compton of the
University of Chicago is national
chairman of the Brotherhood Week
observance. Co-chairmen will be
Prof. Carlton J. H. Hayes of
Columbia University and Roger
W. Straus of New York.

Jesse L. Lasky, who returned
to Hollywood from New York
this week, said that New York
could never take the place of
Hollywood but that it has pos-
sibilities for picture making. J. L.
will return to New York soon
to attend a huddle on the situa-
tion called for Mayor LaGuardia's
bailiwick.
