NEW YORK. — A 72-year-old
woman, who was injured fatally
by an automobile Friday night,
was identified Saturday night by
Dr. Stephen S. Wise, rabbi of the
Free Synagogue, as his sister,
Mrs. Ida Wise Ashner. Dr. Wise's
search for his sister, who was
missing from her home, ended at
the morgue, where her body had
lain for 24 hours.
Mrs. Ashner was crossing 96th
St., from east to west at Broad-
way at 11 o'clock Friday night,
when she was struck and knocked
down by an automobile driven
south on the avenue by Thomas
La Cerra of 48 Rosevelt St., ac-
cording to the police. Mr. La
Cerra called an ambulance and
Dr. Bressler of Knickerbocker
Hospital took her to that institu-
tion. She was found to have suf-
fered a skull fracture.
At 11:56 p. m., only a short
time after she had been admitted
to the hospital, Mrs. Ashner died
of her injuries. No clue to her
identity was found on her person
except a black leather pocketbook
with metal initials. "J. W.," and
the police were unable to learn
what the' initials stood for. The
body was taken to the morgue
pending an investigation,
Members of Mrs. Ashner's
family received the first inkling
that she had met with a mishap
when a relative visited the apart-
ment at 360 Central Park West
where she had lived alone. Finding
her absent, and learning from
employes at the apartment house
that she had not returned home
Friday night, the relative told
other members of the family and
they went to the police. The de-
scription they gave tallied with
that of the unidentified woman at
the morgue and Dr. Wise con-
firmed the identification.
Mrs. Ashner was the widow of
Isidore Ashner and in addition to
Dr. Wise is survived by a daugh-
ter, Mrs. Elmer Wessman, the
