By JACK ROUMAN
•
Executive Secretary of Detroit
A. Z. A.

A question is being asked to-
day with increasing frequency
on the part of the Jews and non-
Jews, on how we should respond
to this growing wave of anti-
Semitism. The answers to this
question may be classified into
two categories. First, these who
maintain that the Jews should
remain silent and passive in the
face of anti-Semitism, and second-
ly, those who maintain that the
Jews have a responsibility to
themselves and democracy, and
therefore should combat anti-
Semitism vigorously.
Many say that the existence
and continuation of our ancient,
old religion rests entirely upon
American Jewry. these people are
Jews and non-Jews who proclaim,
as Mark Twain wrote some time
ago, "The only way to save and
pronlong our beautiful belief
would be by uniting." For Amer-
ican Jewry has tasted and
felt the ting of freedom. They
know the true meaning of liberty
and having a Bill of Rights, in-
stead of a Bill of Death.
If, in time of war, the Jews of
a country should all unite and
fight for that country; if, in time
of pane, the Jews of a country
should all unite and live peace-
fully together, but in time of sup-
pression against their religion in
some far off country, the Jews
should all unite, and show the
world that there are, and that
they are Jews. This would awaken
the Sha Sha Jew, who is afraid
of losing his job, his business, or
his friends. This would cause life
to glow, where before it was
sparkless. The American Jew is
the one who can be our Messiah;
the one who can put the life in
us that hasn't existed before, but
which is primarily the one and
only thing that can stop us from
being the oppressed, instead of
the quiet, peaceful race that we
pray to the Almighty to be.
If you are a Sha Sha Jews,
change yourself, or if you know
of one, help us change him, for
we need aid, the support, the
added backbone of every Jew in
this world of ours today.
We must realize that the Jews
are not born only to serve Jews,
but that God made all his crea-
tions alike, that they might aid
one another. Although from the
time of the first being a complex
arose, and God's beings took on
different beliefs. But just because
one believes in something that
another does not, gives no reason
for this break in unity the Al-
mighty had placed between us.
If we can remember these three
things—pride, heritage and tradi-
tion—we can stop this Sha She
business. For this is no time for
complexes; this is no time for
the Jews to have different ideas
than one another. We are all
needed, and needed very badly.
For not only is there danger of
disintegration from without, but
we have that danger of disintegra-
tion from within. If we are to be
the Messiah to the world Jewry,
we can't possibly let a complex
arise amongst us here. We must
all think alike and we cannot
possibly if we are to let the Sha
Sha Jews exist in our midst. We
must cleanse internal diseases,
sores and impurities, all meta-
phors, that have derived from the
unnecessary, unneeded and most
disliked type of our religion—the
Sha Sha Jew. I again beg of you,
my People, to change the minds
of these Jews, who so wrongly
think of the way that the Jewish
People should survive, by not tak-
ing an important role in life, by
not making themselves conspicu-
ous. How wrong this philosophy
is, for it is the Jew, and always
will be the Jew, that will moot
valuably aid this to exist in the
manner that God wants it to be!
