of gases at metallic surfaces, the
community enjoys better light
from gas-filled electric lamps. Be-
cause our medical centers could
direct the efforts of a corps of
men to solving the problem of
malaria, the American nation is
freed from a great source. Each
of us in his labor or his profession
performs highly specialized work.
It is, however, only by coordinat-
ing our specialized efforts that
the needs of each are satisfied. By
such coordination we have a great-
er abundance than ever before
in history,
As our greatest strength lies in
such cooperation, so our greatest
fear must be of those factors
which tend to introduce dissen-
tious and the formation within
the community of antagonistic
groups. This is clearly the most
vulnerable aspect of a free com-
munity, where we may expect at-
tack by foes from within and from
without. Those who sow the seeds
of hate and discord are thus our
greatest enemies.
Community strength lies in
working together for the common
good, In a technological world
where specialization and coopera-
tion are of unprecedented impor-
tance, the love of our fellows thus
becomes the law of life.
Brotherhood of Mankind
The truth is that science today
as never before is stressing the
brotherhood of all mankind. At
I the moment it is probable that our
greatest strength is to be found
in coordinating the efforts of our
national community. Yet the
rapid trend of social development
—evolution, if you wish—as stim-
ulated by science and technology,
is the growth of larger and larger
communities. Just because such
larger communities, when knit to-
gether by railroads and wires and
radio, are stronger than smaller
ones, they must prevail in the
intense competition among mod-
ern nations. In strengthening the
community life of our nation, we
shall thus be preparing the way
for the development of that world
community toward which science
points,

Incidentally, I would note how
the advances of our knowledge
and techniques have themselves
resulted from contributions from
many sources. Fire,•the wheel, the
inclined plane are prehistoric. Iron
scents to have come either from
the llittities or from the Somali
negroes, the only primitive peo-
ple who continue their own an-
cient method of iron production.
The alphabet came to us from
the Phoenician Semites and print-
ing from the Chinese. Electricity
and magnetism were described by
the Greeks, as was also the helio-
centric solar system.

Answer to Racialism

Coming down to modern times,
in the field of science, .Galileo,
an Italian Catholic, discovered the
laws of falling bodies and started
modern science. Necoton, a Prot-
estant, earnestiy concerned with
religion, established the laws of
mechanics, which were brilliantly
developed by Laplace and La
Grange to whom religion meant
little. Radio waves were discov-
ered by Herz, a German' Jew;
x-rays by Rontgen, a German
Protestant; and cosmic rays by
Hess, an Austrian Catholic. For
the, theory which interprets these
rays we are chiefly indebted to
Maxwell, the English Protestant,
Einstein. the German Jew, and de
Broglie, the French Catholic.
As I consider those who have
discovered the various particles
which compose the cosmic rays,
there are Lorentz, the Dutch free.
thinker, and Thomson of the
Church of England, who identified
the negative electron; Rutherford,
the New Zealander, negligent of
religion, who found the proton;
Anderson, the American of Swe-
dish descent, who first observed
the positive electron; Germany's
Rothe, France's JolMt and Eng-
land's Chadwick who found the
neutrons, America's Irish Protest-
ant Milliken and Italy's Jewish
Rossi who distinguished the show-
er producing rays, and the Jap-
anese Yukawa who predicted the
mesotron which is now the center
of scientific interest.
This is the answer to those
who would contrast Aryan science
and Jewish science.

The world-famous marionettes
and the original New York com-
pany of Tony Sarg's Marionettes
will play afternoon and evening
performances of "Robin Hood,"
Saturday, Nov. 18, in the Scottish
Rite Cathedral of the Masonic
Temple.
To many people who have seen
the various Sarg shows during
the last 16 years the very name
of Tony Sarg's Marionettes spells
enchantment in anticipation. Sarg
is the originator of the Marion-
ette traveling company, and while
he now has imitators too numer-
ous to mention there are still very
few who produce complete plays
and none who have established
the Sarg record of 15 years on
Broadway as a standard theatrical
attraction, competing with the
best the Great White Way and its
prolific side streets can offer.
The Tony Sorg Marionettes
have all the attributes of actors,
and can do many things that the
regular stage actor must omit.
The dolls have moving arms, legs,
eyes, mouths, all done by the aid
of strings which are managed by
wooden controls from a bridge
built above the stage. The oper-
ators are hidden from view and,
though the strings are visible. in

If Tony Sarg had lived in the
days of black magic, says the
Theater Magazine, he would have
been burned as a sorcerer or wiz-
ard, or whatever it is in trousers
that corresponds to a witch. His
puppets are so life-like that they
really smell of sorcery.
