Under the auspices of the Jew-
ish Community Council, a special
conference of Jewish merchants
of Detroit's east side will be held
on Sunday evenkng, Nov. 12, at
8 p. m., in the chapel of Temple
Beth El. The conference is being
called in order to consider certain
problems of the Jewish merchants
of the east side which have arisen
during the past few months.
These problems center around
group conflicts which have been
increased through propaganda
from sources outside of the im-
mediate area. Aaron Rosenberg,
a member of the executive com-
mittee of the Jewish Community
Council and chairman of a special
committee in charge of arrange-
ments, will preside.
Rabbi Leon Fram will be the
principal speaker, on the topic
"Understanding Each Other." Fol-
lowing Rabbi From's. talk there
will be discussion from the floor.
A musical program has been
provided, including vocal selec-
tions in English, Yiddish and He-
brew, by Miss Rhoda Znhavie;
piano selections by Rose Bassin
who will also accompany Miss
Zahavle, and violin selections by
Miss Ida Divinoff.
The meeting is open to all Jew-
ish merchants of the east aide.

the open meeting of Young Israel,

Road, Wednesday evening, Nov.
8. Mr. Rosenberg's address on the
subject "A Jewish Humorist Looks
at the World Scene" will feature
the second in a series of public
meetings sponsored by Young Is.

dent. Charles T. Gellman, chair-
man of the membership commit-
tee, will outline plans for a spe-
cial project to be launched at the
end of the month. Abraham J.
Rosenshine, chairman of the ex-
ecutive board, will preside. Re-
freshments will be served at the
conclusion of the meeting. Mr. Ro-
senberg's address will begin

Lin Yutang, wise and witty
Chinese philosopher whose book,
"The Importance of Living",
headed the non-fiction best-seller
list for so many months, will
speak before the Detroit Town
Hall in the Fisher Theater next
Wednesday, Nov. 8, at 11 a. m.
"Can China Win the War?" will
be his subject.
Dr. Lin returned to New York
from Europe last summer to'work
on his latest book, to be published
this month. Entitled "Moment in
Peking", it deals with the 40-year
period from the Boxer Rebellion
to the present conflict. In her
introduction to Lin Yutang's first
best-seller, "My Country and My
People", Pearl Buck wrote: "The
