PURELY COMMENTARY

By PHILIP

Chase S. Osborn

Spiritual Aristocrat

Chase S. Osborn, 80-year-old ex-governor of
Michigan, is known to many as a rugged person-
ality, as a most cultured person who has traveled
a lot and who knows more about zoology, geology,
metallurgy and the outdoor life than he does about
polities—and he is quite an expert in political
thought.
very few people know that this brilliant man
is also a great student of religion and a veritable
spiritual aristocrat. He is as well versed in the Bible
as he is in the science of outdoor life. Ile knows
the Talmud and sits in reverence over the Hebraic
contributions to mankind.
Last Friday evening, having passed through
Detroit, the former governor called this Commen-
tator to exchange greetings. There was a note of
significance in his call on the Sabbath Eve, because
to took the trouble to ask that we convey this
message to our readers: Mr. Osborn feels a sense
of kinship with us because of a common heritage—
the heritage derived from the teachings of Moses
and the great Ilebrew Prophets. Ile feels that the
civilized peoples who acknowledge the debt to the
Hebraic ethical code can work together in friend-
ship and in harmony.
"Banish hate" is his message on his 80th birth-
day. Ile has banished it from his own heart. This
is the best test of the man's greatness.

SLOMOVITZ

"Every healthy child of every German Mother
means one more battle won in the fight for exist-
ence of the German people. And so, in an ethical
sense, it is impossible to deny to the unmarried
German woman the right to become a mother."
Is it any wonder, therefore, that there should
be such a rapid increase in illegitimate births in
Nazi-land?
Erika Mann quotes one of the outstanding Nazi
leaders„Alfred Rosenberg, who wrote in his "My- e
thus des Zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts": "And so th
German Reich of the future will have to regard the
childless woman—regardless of whether or not she
is married—as an incomplete member of the Na-
tional Commonwealth."
Upon reading this, is it possible that sane women .
—especially American women who are inclined to
follow the Nazi banner—will continue to give the
Ilitlerite salute and to "heil" the swastika?
