Where will hank Greenberg
play baseball in 1940? That's
one of the questions of the
sports world today, and the an-
swer, in all probability, is De-
troit. flank had one of his worst
seasons in years, and gave way
for a good portion of the sea-
son to Rudy York. But at the
end of the season, Mr. Green-
berg was really slapping that
baseball around. He was corn-
ing up fast on the outside when
the Beason ran out on him. And
despite reports he will wind up
with the Yankees this year,
don't you believe it. No team is
going to strengthen the Yanks
by peddling a star like Green-
berg to them: Detroit might sell
Rudy York, but not Greenberg.
At least not to the Yankees,
who seem to do a bit of all right
even with ailing Lou Gehrig
through as a player,

MINERAL SPRING SPA AT ST. LOUIS, MICH., IN 1660
Renewed activity around the
first natural mineral spring dis-
covered in Michigan, located at
St. Louis, Cratiot County, where
a group of local businessmen have
financed a modern bottling plant,
is bringing up to date a health
center that was one of the coun-
try's most notable in the days
shortly following the Civil War,
The spring was discovered in
1869 by pioneers named Holcomb
and Evans while they were drill-
ing for salt. The spring product,
now called "Natural Ray" Mag-
netic Mineral Spring Water, is to
be sent to distributors in all parts
of the United States. During the
first week of operation over 400
cases were shipped to Chicago
alone. Sam Softens of the Poeta-
tan Club has organized a firm to
handle the Detroit territory, •.
Sofferin and Sons.
In • booklet published by
present operators, there is an in-
teresting picture taken in 1880
showing horses and tally-hos, and
people in fashionable dress of that
period, gathered at the Spa. Also,
this extract from a History of
Gratiot County, published In 1684:
"This wonderful spring has
justly attracted the attention of
thousands of people both here and
elsewhere, being not only the first
mineral spring discovered in Mich-
igan, but wonderfully Curative in
various diseases. Many persons of
note have tested its virtues,
among whom might be mentioned

spring was accidentally discovered
in 1869 by Messrs. Holcomb and
Evans of this village, while boring
for salt. The depth of 200 feet
had been reached, when the life-
giving water gushed out."
The city of St. Louis in those
days was practically built around
this wonderful spring and spa.
Through the summer tourists from
Michigan and other states have
been routing their vacation trips
through the thriving little city on
U. S. 27 and M-46, which had its
start in the days when the Pine
River carried tons of logs on its
waters and the Bethany Indian
mission flourished on its banks.
The waters of the spring are mid
to have curative powers equal to
those of the Carlsbad spring in
Germany,
