President Roosevelt's neutrality state-
ments so emphatically echo the sentiments
of the American people that there is little
left to be said regarding the overwhelming
desires of this nation. Those who know
anything at all about the devastating re-
sults of war must oppose armed warfare.
Those who have studied history know
that it is possible to settle differences
among nations without war.
War has never benefited anyone. It
has brought hardship and chaos. This
country can and must stay out of war.
This should be the aspiration of every one
of us, and all Americans are obligated, at
all costs, to support the President in his
task of keeping America a peaceful
nation.

These are the sentimental verses that
have been popular with all students of
German—not only in Germany but
throughout the world. There is nothing
partisan about them, or political. It is
thoroughly German, altogether patriotic,
entirely human. But the Nazis don't
like it: it was written by a Jew. History's
verdict will, of course, restore it to its
original popularity. But unfortunately it
will be hardest to teach it again to the
youth of Germany whose minds have been
oisoned by their brutal leaders.

The Jewish Welfare Federa-
tion of today, with its broad pro-
gram in every functional field of

front, is more valuable and ac-
tually more important to many
more Jews than the charities of
15 and 20 years ago.
The programs support ed

paign concern practically all of
us, because almost all Jews feel
themselves participants in move-
ments touching the inner life of
the community. Psychologically,
if not materially, all of us are
involved In a position which Jew-

troit, thanks to the double-
barrelled federation idea, both
local, general needs and special
Jewish needs—local, as well as
outside, were encompassed early

been a broader exchange of view-
points and a greater inter-play
of various group interests, with
the result that the combined fed-
eration and welfare fund be-
longs to everybody— and the
community, by its universal affil-
iation, recognizes federation as
a great central community serv-
ice.
In such a community, the cli-
mate has been favorable for the
